Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>childrens (more info?)

Last night I was visiting a site where people suggested the
Best Books ever in particular genres but they were mostly adult
novels.
I thought it would be interesting to see what you people would suggest
from Children's Literature.
My list would include the following:
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson
Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt
Goodnight Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian
The Fate of Jeremy Visick by David Wiseman
Tom's midnight garden by Phillippa Pearce
So much to tell you by John Marsden
Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin
I am David by Anne Holme
Redwall ... the whole series by Brian Jaques
Hating Alison Ashley by Robin Klein`
Master of the Grove by Victor Kelleher
I've gone past 10 and there are so many that I'd still like to
include.
I'd not mentioned John Christophers, Monika Hughes or Gary Paulsen.

You might be interested in the just-published 100 BEST BOOKS FOR CHILDREN
written by Anita Silvey and published by Houghton. Of the titles you listed,
five were also included in her selection -- Bridge to Terabithia, Homecoming,
Tom's Midnight Garden, The Wizard of Earthsea, and Redwall. Peter

Interesting to see _Homecoming_ chosen, instead of _Dicey's Song_. I
thought _Homecoming_ was by far the best of the books, myself, but it
usually seems to get passed over on lists.

I also could name many more than 10 but my favorites list is as
follows:

Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle (also A Wind in the DOor and A
Swiftly Tilting Planet)
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and James & the Giant Peach by Roald
Dahl
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
The Hobbit & the Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Afternoon of the Elves by Janet Taylor Lisle
Princess and the Gobline (also The Princess and Curdie) by George
MacDonald
The whole Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper
Anything by Colin Thompson (How to Live Forever is my fave)
and of course the Harry Potter series
I guess you could call me a fantasy nut.

5. Silent to the Bone by E.L. Konigsburg

The cachet of the Newbery probably gives Dicey the edge for many, but I agree
that Homecoming is the better of those two books. But I must admit that I
think the strongest books in the entire cycle are those that feature the boys,
Solitary Blue and especially Sons from Afar and The Runner.

100 is pushing it.

So lets try for a top 10!

1 Hobbit
2 Lion Witch and Wardrobe (substitute any other in the series
possibly)
3 Wizard of Earthsea
4 The Call of the Wild
5 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (excuse Polish spelling-
substitute some other Harry Potter possibly)
6 The Phoenix and the Carpet
7 The Kingdom of Carbonel
8 I Robot
9 The Kraken Wakes
10 The Devil in Vienna

I have instituted flood control but other books by Asimov, Nesbit etc
could be substituted. I also read a lot of Ian Fleming and Dennis
Wheatley but I am not sure about these as children's books.

Okay, I'll bite. Most of these are part of a series; you can take the whole
series as included (ie Narnia books), but I've actually chosen my favourite
in each series. I'm putting The Hobbit and Winnie the Pooh on some kind of
transcendent Hall of Fame list, so they're not included in my top ten - also
I can fit extras in this way!

A Wizard of Earthsea U.K.le Guin

The Hero and the Crown Robin McKinley

The Wierdstone of Brisengamen Alan Garner

The Dark is Rising Susan Cooper

The Little White Horse Elizabeth Goudge

Moominland Midwinter Tove Jansson

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader C.S. Lewis

White Boots Noel Streatfield

The Kingdom of Carbonel Barbara Sleigh

Howl’s Moving Castle Diana Wynne Jones

My list includes (but is certainly not limited to!):

1. The Borrowers - Mary Norton
2. Harris and Me - Gary Paulsen (one of the funniest books I've ever read -
still makes me laugh out loud)
3. The Hobbit - Tolkien
4. Narnia - C.S. Lewis
5. James and the Giant Peach - Dahl
6. A Ring of Endless Light - L'Engle (and all her other stuff - she's
definitely one of my very favourite authors)
7. Tom's Midnight Garden - Pearce
8. Five Little Peppers and How They Grew (not great literature, I'll admit,
but I keep on rereading it for some reason!)
9. The Mennyms - Waugh
10. I Want To Go Home - Gordan Korman

Books I read and reread often as a child (8-11, I'd say), which may not be
the "best", are:

1. Anne McCaffrey: Dragonsong; Dragonsinger; Dragondrums
2. Edward Eager: Half Magic; Magic or Not; Time Garden, etc.
3. Mary Norton: The Borrowers series
4. E.W. Hildick: Louie's Lot; Louie's SOS; Louie's Snowstorm; Manhattan is
Missing; The Active-Enzyme Lemon-Freshened Junior-High School Witch; The
Secret Spenders; The Secret Winners
5. Louise Fitzhugh: Harriet the Spy; The Long Summer
6. Zilpha Keatley Snyder: The Egypt Game
7. Thomas Rockwell: How to Eat Fried Worms; The Portmanteau Book
8. Laura Ingalls Wilder: The Little House series
9. Elizabeth Enright: Gone-Away Lake; Return to Gone-Away; The Melendy
Family
10. E.L. Konigsburg: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler;
Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley and Me, Elizabeth; About the
B'Nai Bagels
