THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. Vol. 26. Jan. to June, 1855. London,
William Little, 1855. With hundreds of engraved illustrations (some of
them maps), many of which chronicle events during the Crimean War
(1853-56). A four-page folding frontis illustrates, "Arrival of the
Emperor and Empress of the French at Windsor Castle," on one side, and a
map of, "Environs of London -- Windsor Castle to Gravesend," on the
other. The February 17th issue shows a picture of a curling "Bon Spiel"
being played on the frozen St. Lawrence River at Montreal. Full-page
views include the New Westminster Bridge (p. 101). A February 24th
blurb and an engraving describe, "Miss (Florence) Nightingale, in the
Hospital at Scutari." Another four-page folding illustration
(Supplement) shows the line-up of ships at, "SEBASTOPOL: First Day's
Attack by the Allied Fleet and the Armies of France and England." There
are a number of scenes of the cold English January and February weather
when the Thames River froze over.
Folio ( 16.5 in. x 11.5 in.) in marbled boards, leather spine and
corners. 670 pp. Professionally rebacked with original gilt-labeled
spine, repaired corners, new front paste-down, etc. Moderate wear. A
few small tears on the folding plates. Minor foxing here and there
throughout. A sound, near fine copy. $500.00 U.S.
