We're 23 years off, but it looks like America has become the Oceania
from the novel. Aside from electronic spying that tracks our every
move, we also seem to be in a state of eternal warfare, complete
with two interchangeable enemies/allies with names so similar that
people can't remember which is which (Eurasia and Eastasia, Iran
and Iraq).
And just like Eastasia went from ally to enemy in the novel, Iraq
went from ally to enemy in the real world. While Iraq was at war
with Eurasia (oops, Iran), Saddam was our bestest friend and Bush's
rich CIA-connected daddy provided him with money, weapons and spare
parts, and probably the chemicals used to make the nerve gas he
used on the Kurd proles. Suddenly he becomes our enemy, and while
Iran doesn't become our ally, it does ally itself with Pakistan who
is also our ally.
Then comes the concept of doublethink which applies to Pakistan and
Iran in the USA's argument that nuclear proliferation in the
izlamist world is a bad thing when it comes to Iran's allegedly
peaceful program, but just fine when it involves izlamist Pakistan's
stated military program. The doublethink also includes believing
that Iran is Satan Incarnate and that the Axis of Evil revolves
around him, yet also believing that Pakistan is our friend despite
providing Iran with substantial technology and supplies and
probably uranium (not to mention harboring Osama bin Laden).
