3rd age Balrog vs Ancalagon the Black

Post subject: 3rd age Balrog vs Ancalagon the Black
Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>tolkien, others (more info?)

Has anyone been struck by the similar descriptions of death between
Ancalagon (slain by Eärendil) and the 3rd age Balrog (slain by Gandalf):

both were slain on or over a mountain - and both broke the respective
mountain in their deaths ...

i wonder of Tolkien was conscious of one when he wrote the other ...?

Not to mention the Balrog Glorindel slew -- a fight on a high place, a fall
into an abyss. No mention of any broken mountains in that fight, though. Smile
