Post subject: Question about 50th anniversary edition

Hello.

My 1974 paperbacks are just about ready to be lovingly retired, and I
was considering the new 50th anniversary edition, but I haven't actually
seen it, and I have a couple of questions about it if anybody knows the
answers.

1. Does this edition have any of the Alan Lee paintings?

2. Have the 400+ "corrections" by Christopher Tolkien been listed
anywhere? I'm pretty finicky about such things.

I know it just came out, so maybe it's too soon for much to be out there
on it, but I thought I'd ask.

No, but it does include Tolkien's "Book of Mazarbul" pictures.

There are about 360 emendations; the number is being exaggerated. All
of these will be documented in a volume of annotations to _The Lord of
the Rings_ to be published in 2005. Meanwhile, the 50th anniversary
edition includes a note by my wife (Christina Scull) and me which
summarizes the sort of changes that have occurred, with Christopher's
approval.

Believe me, Christina and I are working very hard to finish this. The
main reason for its delay is that we've found so much new information
about Tolkien in libraries and archives that we've needed more time to
process and describe it all. What was originally to be only one volume
became two, which added complications of format and indexing. Also,
along the way, HarperCollins and the Tolkien Estate commissioned us to
do other, more time-sensitive work, including editorial work for the
new 50th anniversary _Lord of the Rings_ and a volume of annotations
to that book; and Christina's father died, and I've continued to have
a full-time library job which has become even more demanding with the
years.

Anyway, we're sorry that you're having to wait for the _Companion and
Guide_, and appreciate that you're looking forward to it.

A correct and complete work is well worth waiting for.
And I have a good price locked in at Amazon.

But if we are to gripe about pointless delays:

(1) What has happened to "Mr. Baggins", the promised
work which will do for The Hobbit was HoME did for LotR?
Why doesn't the Tolkien estate and the libraries pull
the rug out from whatever worthless slugs are supposed
to be working on this and commission someone who will
actually do the work?

(2) What's the Tolkien estate going to do with the
Translation Guide which they pulled from the Tolkien
Compass? Are they planning to sit on it forever and
have us rely on the Web versions or are they planning
to actually do something with it?

The British 50th Anniversary Edition is still not available. Does
anybody (Mr. Hammond?) knows whether it's being reprinted? I'm asking
because I'm a collector and would like to get a first printing of it.
For some reason the book went out of stock with all online retailers
(e.g. Amazon.co.uk) before I realized it had been released! Current
supply estimates are 3-5 weeks, which make me wonder whether there was
an initial, small, first printing, and the book has now gone to a
second printing. Any information regarding this would be much
appreciated.

As I've verified that the US edition has a printing number (10 9 8 7 6
5 4 3 2 1), I assume the British one would also have.

I spoke with John Rateliff about this just two weeks ago at the
Tolkien conference in Milwaukee. He has done a lot of work on this and
still intends to finish it.

The Estate declined to have the Guide to Nomenclature included in the
reissue of A Tolkien Compass because they felt (and feel) that it
would be more appropriately included in the book of annotations to The
Lord of the Rings that Christina and I are preparing for 2005. The
Guide provides much raw material for annotations, of course, so will
appear extracted here and there; but it will also be printed in its
entirety, probably as an appendix.
