Review of a book called "How to Get Your Child to Love Reading".

In truth, perhaps this book would be better for giving to
non-ABML Moms who ask ABML Moms how they do it, since
bookworm-age is already in full swing around here... <g>

Honestly I had the only 2 yr old I had ever seen who would sit by himself and
look at a book for 30 mins to an hour at a time. Mommy did (and does) it,
Daddy did (and does) it, Aidan did and does it. Hopefully Nathan will do it.

My two did the same thing. I have a photograph I will *treasure*
always of Athena aged around 2 or 3 having fallen asleep with a book
in her hands. She's 'dead to the world' but wouldn't let go of her
book for anything!

My three have all loved to go aff and look at books, although the younger
two are not nearly as into as the oldest was. He would (and still will) sit
and listen to us read until we literally could speak no more. The other two
bring me books to read and then spend the reading time fighting over who
sits next to Mommy.

One reason I'm SO glad I only have 2 - Mummy has a left side and a
right side so there's room for each of them to sit next to me while I
read to them.

At 7 and 8 they STILL love to be read to, and a Bedtime Story is still
a part of the going-to-sleep ritual. These days, it's more likely to
be the latest chapter of a novel rather than a Picture Book but that's
fine. Since Evil Mummy will usually only read ONE chapter a night,
they have to read the next few chapters for themselves if they want to
know what's going to happen next. It gets them reading things much
beyond what they believe is their capacity...

Most of the time, Dev prefers to play at my feet and the older two sit on
either side. But occasionally, they all decide to fight and it is usually
over the same side. I have begun ending that fight by making them sit in a
cirlce in front of me and turn the book after I read, like in story time.

We alternate between chapter books for Joe and Picture books for the little
ones, but I often read 2 or 3 chapters a night when I read a chapter book.
At the moment, Joe is more afraid of trying and failing at reading bigger
books, than he is curious at what comes next. He just got glasses for
reading, so I am hoping they will make reading easier on him.

Athena is right handed, and prefers to sit at my right hand. Ishtar
is left handed and prefers to sit at my left hand. It works out
nicely.

It depends on how long the chapter is whether we read a whole chapter
or not. In fact, when we were reading Harry Potter we frequently only
managed half a chapter a night because they are so much longer than
many other books we read.

Athena was always afraid of trying and failing with her reading until
about a year ago. However, allowing her to read the chapter *to
herself*, rather than aloud really helped. Then, the next night I'd
read aloud the chapter she'd read to herself, and she'd see how well
she'd done. That improved her confidence no end and since then she's
gone from strength to strength. She tackles much more complicated
books now without needing help, but she still loves being read to.

Ishtar rarely seems afraid of failing - she laughs, shrugs it off and
keeps going! I hope she can keep that happy attitude going all her
life.

They are MUCH too long for reading out loud--I simply don't have the
patience to read an entire chapter of HP to the kids. My husband,
though, has been reading it to Matt--they are now on the most recent
book. He sometimes manages several chapters in one day!

I've been trying to figure out how they fill a whole book on that
subject. <bemused smile>

It's just... I noticed what my parents did to encourage me to read.
They did two simple things: they read to me, and they read to themselves
for fun. The first got me used to reading. The second made it clear this
wasn't "just kid's stuff" that I'd "grow out of" when I grew up.

That's all they did. That's all it took, too, since it was certainly
effective. <BIG SMILE, REALLY BIG GRIN>

Dad gave up on ending at the end of chapters. Too many times, they end
in cliff-hangers! Then I'd beg him to go on to a good stopping place.
<smile> Eventually he looked out for them, and stopped there, and wouldn't
go on to the end of the chapter no mater how hard I begged. <chuckle,

Like I said, don't expect it to end any time soon. It's not going to
stop just because they can read the books themselves now. <smile>

I hope you won't be too surprised if that doesn't stop any time soon.
Dad read to me into my teens. He only stopped when I wanted my bedtime
later than he wanted to stay up to read to me. <chuckle, smile>

By the time he quit, Dad had been reading "adult" books to me for a few
years - fantasy, science fiction, and the occasional popular nonfiction
book. <SMILE>

But that's WHY I like to end at the end of the chapter. The
cliffhanger 'just got to know what happens next' is why Athena started
to read the following chapters for herself. Independent reading is a
Good Thing.

My parents bought me books on dinosaurs. Since they could no longer
pronounce the names- I had to read and that was at about age 2 or 3.
Mother brought me to this pediatric speech pathologist- becuase I
couldn't hear as a toddler <now I don't want to hear- today's music>
so this woman asks if I could talk...
Mother: What's the first feathered dinosaur?
lil 'Phyre: Archeapteryx silly!
Woman: <drops her teeth>

Additionally, I had already memorized "Who will play with little
dinosaur" and they couldn't cheat and skip parts. Of course the
obsession also lead to them being dragged into DC just to go to the
Natural History museum's third floor.

<smile> Then you aren't the softy Dad was on this matter. I very often
managed to wheedle him into continuing past a cliffhanger ending. He
doesn't like those himself. <REALLY BIG GRIN>

Oh, I agree with independant reading being good. <SMILE> It's well
worth encouraging. It's just that that trick didn't work for us...
thankfully it wasn't really needed anyway. I wanted more reading in a day
than my parents and grandmother were willing to do, for all their

Oh, I'm the World's Meanest Mummy. My girls know this already, and I
revel in the title. VERY occasionally, IF it's a short chapter coming
up AND a short chapter just finished AND we don't have an
early-morning-schoolday tomorrow I MIGHT get wheedled into an extra
chapter. Not often though and they know it.

Different methods work for different kids. As long as you find the
one that works, that's all that matters, right?

Since the summer break is coming up we've agreed on our Big Summer
Read to be Harry Potter books 4 and 5. In Summer they tend to go to
bed more or less together so we can read a single chapter together.
Last night, as a special treat, we started on Goblet Of Fire. They
were Very Happy Munchkins when we turned out the light.
