Night Shade Books [www.nightshadebooks.com] is pleased to announce that
it has acquired the U.S. publication rights to THE ALGEBRAIST by Iain.
M. Banks. THE ALGEBRAIST is the new science fiction novel by the
legendary author of PLAYER OF GAMES, LOOK TO WINDWARD, and AGAINST A
DARK BACKGROUND, and many others.

THE ALGEBRAIST will be published in hardcover in the United States in
September of 2005. This novel is not part of the author's previous
"culture" series, but is rather is a stand-alone novel set in a
completely new universe.

Night Shade Books has previously worked with Banks, publishing (for the
first time in the U.S.) his collection of short fiction, THE STATE OF
THE ART. In addition to Iain. M. Banks, Night Shade books has worked
with M. John Harrison, Kage Baker, Joe Haldeman, Steven Erickson, David
Drake, Jeff Vandermeer, Liz Williams and many others.

Praise for THE ALGEBRAIST:
"The Algebraist is a perfect place to have your mind blown to
smithereens with all that its vast canvas delivers. In particular, if
you're used to the less ambitious and necessarily less physically
astonishing pleasures of contemporary fiction, you might want to take
out insurance on the integrity of your skull" -- The Guardian

"Iain M. Banks will shock the heck out of you in 'The Algbraist' with
nothing more than a sharp mind, and he'll do so continually,
surprisingly and in ways that will make you laugh out loud... But where
Banks really shines is in his ability to evoke subtle, satiric swipes
at the world we know within the universe he creates." - Rick
Kleffel, The Agony Column

"Existing Banks fans will love this wide-screen space-opera, while
those new to his work... will find this easily accessible." - The
Alien Online
