No word if it is crewed, but it is a sensor platform, and they allude that
either the sensors (probably) or the blimp design (maybe) had been tested in
Iraq and Afghanistan.

Agency Tests Security Blimp in Washington
Wednesday September 29, 2004 6:31 PM
WASHINGTON (AP) - Here's a head-turner for a security-nervous city: A large
white object was spotted in the skies above the nation's capital in the
pre-dawn hours Wednesday.
Pentagon police said the Defense Department is testing a security blimp -
fully equipped with surveillance cameras. The white blimp was spotted early
Wednesday morning hovering at various times over the Pentagon and the U.S.
Capitol.
The 178-foot-long device, which is expected to remain in the skies until
Thursday, is conducting a mission for the Defense Department.
Authorities say the airship is equipped with infrared cameras designed to
provide real time images to military commanders on the ground. The equipment
on the blimp already is being used to protect troops in Afghanistan and
Iraq.
The Army says the device will make at least one 24-hour flight in the
District of Columbia area. It has been in the region since last week, and is
also being used for test runs over the U.S. Marine Corps Base in nearby
Quantico, Va., and the Chesapeake Bay. >> Stay informed about: ATTACK BLIMP takes to the skies above Washington! |

For those who don't believe the Guardian (by the way it seems to be a
passive surveillance device not an ATTACK BLIMP:
Army blimp paraded over D.C.
Developmental surveillance airship could patrol military zones,
officials say.
Associated Press
September 30, 2004
WASHINGTON -- A developmental Army surveillance blimp made an extended
appearance over the nation's capital Wednesday, buzzing over the
Pentagon and other landmarks in what officials said was a
demonstration of a technology that could be used to protect troops.
The 178-foot-long white blimp -- the military prefers to call it an
"airship" -- is equipped with infrared and optical cameras and can
transmit pictures to controllers on the ground. Similar equipment
already is used in Iraq and Afghanistan, mounted on tall towers or
tethered balloons called aerostats, giving security forces a
bird's-eye view of what's happening at the periphery of a military
base or airfield.
Put cameras on blimps, and they can patrol roadways, pipelines and
towns, military officials said. Compared with other military hardware,
blimps are cheap -- running $2 million to $4 million each.
Navy Cmdr. Mike Giauque, a deputy project manager for the surveillance
systems, said they also can take some punishment. Bullets puncturing
the blimp's envelope will not cause a catastrophic deflation or
explosion, because the helium inside is close to normal air pressure.
It will fly out of range of most small arms, Giauque said, and any
militarily useful blimp would have countermeasures against
surface-to-air missiles. However, blimps can be vulnerable to bad
weather, particularly high winds.
Blimps can hover for extended periods of time because they need little
fuel to maneuver. The blimp over Washington was to be aloft for 24
hours.

I know. "Attack Blimp" just sounds a lot better. Plus, if missiles can be
hung on Predator drones, why not airships? One wonders if air to air as well
as air to ground would have to be provided. Can a Maverick or Hellfire be
laser or optically guided onto another aircraft, if it is a subsonic
aircraft?
I know it sounds morbid, but a blimp-based weapons platform might be the
ultimate ingredient in a long-term Combat Air Patrol.

The Hellfire is an anti armor weapon and in now way adaptable for
air-to-air use. One uses the right tool for the job.

Depends on the target. Hellfire was considered reasonably credible as an
anti-helicopter weapon and should be adequate against light aircraft.
Air-to-air Maverick is probably too big for the job, though, even if the
guidance would work.

It isn't, but if that is what you have and a helicopter is hovering nearby

Indeed, if one were trying to deal with something of the mass of an
airliner, the much larger warhead of a Maverick would be more plausible
to break it up. Of course, that would still leave lots of big pieces to
fall somewhere. ISTR some discussion of using it if a plane coming down
the Potomac could be intercepted over the river.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: ATTACK BLIMP takes to the skies above Washington! |
