| My 9yr old is flying from FL to TX with his grandma next month for 5 days.
I shall proceed to panic on here so I can stay calm for him and make it seem
an adventure and not scary.

cash for fixing it is flowing to dentists and cars )

I'm somewhat amazed that my nephews don't have any problems with
flying since their mother certainly does. This is largely the
result of a flight while she was in college in which the airplane
flew through some extremely violent weather. To this day (50 years
later) as soon as possible after takeoff she buys a strong drink to
calm her nerves.
If the weather in the flight does turn out to be bad, hopefully
grandma can make it a learning experience about weather, rather
than a terrifying ordeal. If your kid is at all interested in
weather, then with or without a bumpy ride he might be nudged in
the direction of "gee, I can see the tops of clouds!" wonder,
and away from "Grandma, I'm scared."

It's not so much the flying as my baby going far away. He went with Dad to
IL for a funeral in April while I stayed home with the little ones because I
had finals. Because of finals, I could concentrate on them instead of
worrying about my guys being gone. But I don't have finals to distract me
now.
He used to have motion sickness in the car when he was little, but hasn't
for a while now. I plan on packing lots of gum for the ride for ear
popping. He is just the type that worries even when there is no reason.

Grandma has been on enough flight to not really worry, but she does get
motion sickness and so tends to bury herself in a book with the minimal dose
of meds. My son is bringing his own cd player and some books. He just
discovered the Xanth series, so that will keep him busy for a while.

I can do some research online and find some pics to let him know what kind
of sights he might see from the plane.

You're saying that airlines these days offer paying vict^Wpassengers
objects that can be described as "food"?

Sigh...I just got reminded of my age: my initial response to the above
was to recall the days when the airline stewardesses routinely offered
chewing gum to every passenger. (For the curious: the reason was that
in the days before today's well-pressurized cabins which seldom reach
a cabin altitude higher than 5000' except at higher airports, chewing
gum helped passengers equalize the pressure in their ears.)

If you wait a while (preferrably over 21 years) the disease mutates to
Grandmotherhood.

When they even do that. A lot airlines have gone back to charging for
their.... food.... if they offer it at all. Nowadays it's half a can of
Coke and a bag of pretzels or chex mix unless you're desperate or flying
Internationally. >> Stay informed about: Aaaaaaack! |

Well, this is with Southwest, so I doubt they offer much if they offer
anything. When my dad has flown, he comes back with spicy peanuts which the
kids won't eat. I'll make sure to pack him some snacks he likes.
