Hi Ray

I hate you. I really do. Smile

Just finished "Into a dark realm" and unfortunatly I had to realize that the
book stops in the middle of the story. I can't remember any other time where
I was waiting for a book to come out so desperatly. My wife is now waiting
for the german translation of "Into a dark realm" and I'm pretty sure she
will be even madder when she is finished and also has to wait another year
or so.

So stop reading mails and get back to writing Smile

One thing I was a bit disappointed about was the identity of the Gardener.
As soon as he was mentioned it was clear to me that this had to be Macros. I
would have prefered if it had been somebody else or if you somehow less
obvious, or am I the only one who saw that one coming?

But otherwise this book was a great read as allways. At first the Dasati
seemed to be a bit ruthless but otherwise very human but that notion soon
evaporated. You habe painted a VERY alien nation (excuse the pun).

Sorry to cause such stress. If you saw Macros coming, you're the only
one. I didn't know it was him until I wrote the scene. I then had to
stop and ask myself what the hell was going on. Sometimes my
subconscious works things out before I realize it. Then I recognized
there's a whole lot of Karma in that guys life he now has to pay off.
It'll make more sense in the next book (I hope).

Thanks for the kind words about the Dasati. It's their struggle to
regain their "humanity" for lack of a better word that interest me as a
story teller.

Best, R.E.F.

Well, he did put spoiler in the subject.

IADR is out in Oz. Dymocks, A&R, etc. all have it.

This is very strange to me. It reads as if was planned a long time ago and
not it makes a lot of sense in that regard. I never would have seen that it
came to you while writing.

I'm sure.

Actually this sounds strange. As far as I understand your concept of a
universe the circles or levels are different. This is no way to make them
"equal" and this is the case in more ways then the amount of energy is
available. Midkemia and Kelewan are in the middle of everthing, in balance
between order and chaos, good and evil. If you gog a level higher everthing
will seem more orderly and more "good" (better would have been the wrong
word her). The same is the case if you decend one level.

So it shouldn't be possible for a native of the "second hell" to become
human. They maybe can regain some part of goodness (it is only the 2. level
after all) but they still will be very alien to us. In my eyes the Ipiliac
have only been able to get more humanlike because the spend so much time "in
between".

But I guess I'm wrong there.

Think of it as an X/Y coordinate thing. The levels are the X
coordinate, and the good/evil balance is a Y. The Dasati are where
they're supposed to be along the X axis (though they're trying to screw
with that, as well) but they are way out of balance on the Y. If that
makes sense.

Best, R.E.F.

Not in Oz??

I bought and finished it weeks ago. Brilliant BTW, but now as has been said,
to wait for the next part, not easy.

Came out 29th September, and as usual, I had paid in advance so all I had to
worry about was finding a quiet place to get into it.

I have to sneak in and also say... well done on the Dasati. I was more
then amazed at how well you made them feel "Alien" in both nature and
morals. Great job.

As far as Macros, it was unexpected to me. I thought you filled in the
explanation of how he turned up after dying very well.

Hehee! I take issue with that. Only last year I speculated thusly in this
very group when discussing the Talnoy:

*************************************
Date: Sun, Sep 11 2005 5:49 am
> if the Talnoy worry Nakor I reckon that makes the Talnoy seriously
> nasty bastards...Smile

Yep, I noticed that too. It takes a bit to rattle Nakor.

> I bet Macros knew a bit about 'em...Smile (maybe.....)

Yes, methinks you are right. However I don't think he could be responsible
for them being there. I mean, I know he is/was very powerful, commanding
power only hinted at thus far, but unless he was controlling them then I
can't see how even he'd get them there. And exactly who is this other
magician (I forget the name he went under when Tal met him) and what is he
doing? I get the feeling that he's tied into Macros somehow.

Arghhh! Speculation! I can't wait for the books!

*************************************

I was replied to with:

"BTW, from what Mr. Feist has said in the past, I don't think we'll ever
read anything about Macros again - at least not with him playing an active
role.
Regards,
Chris"

I'm sooo looking forward to it. I haven't even got to read Into a Dark Realm
yet but couldn't help myself from clicking your post Ray.

Yeah I know but I couldn't resist finding a bit about what was to come.
I ALWAYS read spoilers...Smile

I admit I only did a very cursory bookshop crawl the other day and the
only shop I went into (Minotaur) didn't have it on the shelves so I
assumed that they didn't have it at all. I was wrong so a quick trip
into the city over the weekend will give me a reading material fix for
a day or so...Smile In my (feeble) defence I was in a tearing rush to get
across town by public transport (mix of train, tram and bus) and I
really shouldn't have even gone into the shop if I wanted to be sure of
catching the required train.

Anyway I'm looking forward to getting my grubby paws on it.

And Stefan. I don't really hate you - I just HAD to have a dig Oz style.

See, this is why I prefer to pick them up as they come out, but wait for the
conclusion to be published and then read em all in one go...

I think that the characters take on a life of their own. I mean, I know that
they're your creations and all but they're so realistically portrayed that
it's almost like you can second-guess them as you would a real person. I for
one have been half expecting the return of Macros, more and more so as
details about the Talnoy came out and it became obvious that nobody in the
conclave seem to have the remotest chance of 'directing' them or controling
them. It's just the way it felt to me, that Macros had to come back,
especially when it became more obvious that it was he who put them in
Novindus.

However, I didn't expect to find him where I did.

Having finally just finished reading this book an hour ago (It's only just
become available in New Zealand) all I can say is.... Wow!!

Not wanting to sound like a Fan-boi or anything but the Dasati are *very*
well portrayed. I haven't read a book that was as interesting, imaginative
and thought-provoking as this since I first read The Magician. I had to
force myself to put it down from time to time so that I could prolong the
enjoyment. Kudos Ray.

The irony of Macros 'the Black' being keeper of 'The White' would be
something to do with the Karma thing huh? Smile

I've wondered about Bek a bit too in the past, I think I know his role now.
It's hard to not speculate....

All-in-all an awesome book Ray, thanks. Some of your best work IMHO. I
*really* can't wait for "Wrath" now.
--
Shaun.

P.S. Couple things: What has the creature on the cover got to do with the
contents of the book? Bloody publishers! <g>

Where do you report type-setting errors? The book I have here is printed and
bound in Australia by Griffin Press and page 340, line 23, word one is 'to'
when it should be 'too'. Smile

It would help the discussion if you had read the book Smile
Yes, it is Macros, the question remains who (or what) is Macros or for that

Into a Dark Realm impressions and misprint (some spoilers) - Well I for one loved the book. Good pacing and tight plotting made it a 2 night page turner.
