I'm not currently reading New Mutants: Academy X, (and I didn't follow New
Mutants v.2), and I am considering starting. Would someone mind giving me a
brief synopsis of each of the students featured in the book, that way I can
guage my interest? Danke!

Noriko Ashida -- former homeless girl with electricity absoprtion/generation
powers, she can also "run" really fast. She has serious problems controlling
her powers, so relies on containment gloves.

Davis Alleyne -- telepathic mimicry of others' skills and knowledge. He has
trouble controlling the power.

Sofia Mantega -- Wind control. Apparently comes from fairly wealthy parents,
but her father doesn't have much to do with her. She's very close to her
father's butler(?) -- he's more of a father than her real dad.

Laurie Collins -- Pheromone-based emotion control. She has some difficulty
controlling her powers.

Josh Foley -- Omega-class healer. He was an anti-mutant bigot (even a brief
member of a violent anti-mutant group) until his powers surfaced.

Dust -- as previously seen in New X-Men. Arabic girl who can transform into a
dust-like substance.

That's about as good as I can do.

Her father has disowned her and, when last seen was trying to disprove
paternity. She has far and away the best control over her powers of the
various new new mutants.

An interesting point, which may or may not be acknowledged post-Reload,
when his parents basically washed their hands of him, Dani (not the
school, not Professor X) became his legal guardian.

There's also Josh Guthrie, who apparently is now going to be called Jay
so he won't be confused with Josh Foley.

Well, he doesn't really have *any* control over it. It's always on. Lucky
for him, that's not quite the same dilemma someone with, say, perpetual
optic blasts would have.

Just to add to Blakgard's summary...

: Noriko Ashida -- former homeless girl with electricity absoprtion/generation
: powers, she can also "run" really fast. She has serious problems controlling
: her powers, so relies on containment gloves.
:
: Davis Alleyne -- telepathic mimicry of others' skills and knowledge. He has
: trouble controlling the power.
:
: Sofia Mantega -- Wind control. Apparently comes from fairly wealthy parents,
: but her father doesn't have much to do with her. She's very close to her
: father's butler(?) -- he's more of a father than her real dad.
:
: Laurie Collins -- Pheromone-based emotion control. She has some difficulty
: controlling her powers.
:
: Josh Foley -- Omega-class healer. He was an anti-mutant bigot (even a brief
: member of a violent anti-mutant group) until his powers surfaced.
He was recently wounded and, in healing himself, altered his DNA
subconsciously so now he's gold in color, and thus an obvious mutant.

: Dust -- as previously seen in New X-Men. Arabic girl who can transform into a
: dust-like substance.

:
: That's about as good as I can do.

There's also:
Teachers:
Scott Summers, Emma Frost - Headmasters of the school. Scott mentors a
group of not-fleshed-out students called the Corsairs, while Emma mentors
a groups she's called the Hellions.

Various other X-Men in cameos...

Danielle Moonstar- Mentor to the 'New Mutants' group.
Karma, Rahne - From the old NM. Haven't showed up in New X-Men yet but
are supposed to be playing a role again.

The 'Hellions' (who, despite the name aren't evil, although they are sort
of a rival 'clique' to the new mutants and they butt heads a good deal):

Julian Keller- 'Hellion', Telekinetic, kind of a jerk, although seemingly
with a crush on Sofia. A bit 'odd' in that he's perfectly tolerant of
odd-looking mutants, but is intolerant of people he doesn't think fit in
socially. Turned on Josh quickly upon learning of his power, gave up on
Laurie as 'Weird' because she kept to herself all the time, and shooed
Noriko away from the front gates because she looked like a homeless
person.

Josh 'Jay' Guthrie- 'Icarus', Wings, beautiful voice (maybe non mutant),
and healing factor. Brother of Cannonball and Husk, also appearing
occasionally in Uncanny. Roommate of Sammy the Fish Boy

Santo Vaccario - 'Rockslide'. Looks basically like a young version of The
Thing, covered in a rocky skin, though it's not as orange.

Brian Cruz - 'Tag'. In an earlier issue they mentioned his powers are
'esoteric', but I can't remember if they ever said what they actually
were.

Cessily Kincaid - 'Mercury'. The only girl in the Hellions, her body's
composed of an organic-mercury type substance, enabling her to flow and
shift her form. She was briefly Laurie's roommate, as she was immune to
her powers, but it didn't work out for other reasons.

Sooraya Qadir, 'Dust' (listed above, but she's actually on the Hellions
team so I'm saying her again)

Turned on Josh quickly upon learning of his _past_ (that is, as a
mutant-hater), not his power, which he knew about quite early on. They
were friends until he heard Josh used to be a Reaver.

How old is she? (She's not the liquid-metal mutant from Spider-man a
couple years back, is she? She'd be early college age if so.)

Are you sure? I could have sworn it was the School.

Anyway, one thing I can't figure out - when did he become yellow/gold
colored? Was it after he healed and got gutted by Rahne? Did I just
miss the reference?

Exactly. Rahne gutted him at the end of issue 11. In issue 12, Hank and
others agreed that he could heal himself if he was conscious, but he was
in a coma and his healing power isn't automatic. Noriko gave him a minor
shock to make him wake up, and he then healed himself, but came out gold.
Hank speculated that it was a secondary mutation manifesting, but Dani
told Josh that she was sure that he had done it himself, either
consciously or unconsciously, so that he could be 'special'. He says that
he knows that he's caused Dani a lot of trouble, and suggests that she
might want to have another counselor take him on. She tells him

"Josh, when your parents decided to give up custody... a 'school' can't be
your legal guardian. Someone had to sign. That someone was me."

In case that didn't make her perception of their relationship clear
enough, she then says

"If I ride you hard, it's cause that's what parents do."

Speaking of teachers, Karma is suspiciously absent. I can let it slide
on the assumption that she doesn't have her own group yet, but I really
hate the idea of her being gone from the book.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

From what I understand (and I supposed this is semi-spoilerish) from
creator discussions, she _is_ coming back, but they consciously decided to
leave her out of the first few issues to make them new reader friendly
(after all, her 'role' so far was to be friend of the mentor of the main
cast) and focus on the changes in school policy with Scott and Emma in
charge. But she (and Rahne) will be back fairly quickly.

Never heard of the mutant you speak of, but Cessily seems to be a
teenager about the same age as the rest of the cast, probably 16 or so
(but I don't think they've stated outright). Maybe she's the Spidey
mutant's younger sister. Wink

Initially it was just said that Josh's parents signed over custody to
the school, however it was later revealed that SOMEONE had to sign the
paperwork accepting custody (not the institution of the school) and
Danielle had accepted that responsibility and views herself as Josh
Foley's parent now.

It was when you say, New Mutants 12 after Rahne's gutted him. He
healed himself, radically transforming his body in the process into
the golden form we now see.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

With the tacit "no codenames and costumes" modus operandi of New
Mutants Vol2, it struck me how much both help distinguish characters.
Half the time I didnt recall the characters' names and mentally
referred to them as "Wind Girl", "Pheromone Chick", "Cocky Healer",
"Guy who is just like Synch".
Hopefully with the codenames for Emma's group, the rest of the kids
will get some as well.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

They clarified later that it's Dani. As the story points out, the
School CAN'T be his legal guardian. It has to be an individual.
