Yes, The Adept books are frequently discussed here, so you can be sure no
one will take exception if you talk about them, too. We rarely take
exception around here, as a matter of fact. Any Deryni/Adept fan who plays
nicely with others is very welcome. =o)

Thanks Melissa. I read the Adept series and turned right around and read
them again. Some of my questions were answered with the second reading but I
still have a few odd ones

You going to keep us in suspense as to what your odd questions are? I'm
uniquely qualified to answer the odd ones. I reserve the right to
answer them oddly of course, but I'm just having that kind of month.

Well, it's little things like during Peregrine and Julia's wedding there's a
teeny comment made about "both mothers" being present. But absolutely
nothing is ever said about Peregrine's mother. Was she a jerk like his
father I wonder? We know nothing about him really. Is the Lovat family
wealthy or middle class? I'm just curious.
Why in the world did KK give my favorite character a name like Peregrine? I
get the falcon connection but geez...what a name.
There are other questions, but I'll save them for now

I always associate the name with Peregrine Took, the Hobbit in LOTR. THAT
does weird things to the mind, sometimes. =o) I have a feeling that, since
Peregrine's parents are very much peripheral to the plot, and the series
already gives us several people to remember, that KK and DTH won't go into
all that much detail about people who show up to be 'spear carriers', that
is they show up out of one scene in one book, and then promptly disappear,
again. I do hope though, that the elder Mrs. Lovat is not a jerk. Since
Peregrine went to the same school as Lady Laura's grandson Alasdair, I'd
estimate he belongs to an upper-middle class to moderately wealthy family.
He was able to become an artist, which is not exactly a practical profession
in terms of someone who really needs to start making a living, so I assume
he didn't have to worry about supporting his mother after his father's
death.

They attended Oxford which is pretty cheap. Heck my own undergraduate
education was more expensive. In fact tuition is free if you make less than
20,000 pounds (more or less). So that alone didn't tell me anything about
his status, but the fact that he was accepted by a wealthy, noble family
such as Lady Laura did make me wonder. Your points also indicate a middle to
upper middle class family. Or whatever they call it in Scotland
You know, he does have the manners of someone who is accustomed to wealth or
at least be around the wealthy. I don't think your average UK citizen is
taught protocol for addressing titled individuals. At least my English
friends weren't. Although they are better mannered than the average American

The impression I got, from the name and general good manners, was that he
was "posh but poor" (relatively speaking). In other words, from one of
those families that was very much from the upper class, but had lost all
the family money a couple of generations ago. >> Stay informed about: Are the Adept books discussed here also? |

*grin* Awesome, Irene. Death of an Adept was the first (and so far
only) book I ever read *twice* before taking it back to the library.
I was so disappointed that it was over, I just dove right back in!
Mmm, love that one.

Heee! It sorta works for me, though. They're both the sort of
young'uns who grow up as the story progresses.
I could definitely see Billy Boyd playing him, too! *g*

Me, too. But then my Tolkien-saturated brain comes up with "Fool of a
Took! Why not throw yourself in next time!" I can't tell you what that
does to the sequence of the Adept books (which I just finished
re-re-re-ad nauseam/ad infinitum-reading.
