| Were there more than two statues at or near the Argonath? The reason I ask is
that in the movie, Frodo walks by a very large toppled head. Also we see
several smaller statues about Amon Hen. Or were there only the two statues
before the falls of Rauos? IIRC, Elendil and Isildur ( or was it Anarion? )

The statues were Isildur and Anarion... The books mention no other statues
nearby...

Correct.
On the other hand, since Amon Hen had some special significance to the
Númenoreans/Gondorians it is not unreasonable to assume that there had
been some building and on the buildings some ornaments.

In the FotR EE dvd, Jackson notes in his commentary that Amon Hen is an
ancient place of worship for the Gondorians. Must have read a different book
to the one I read.

Agreed. Even some other minor statues lining paths even.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Argonath Question |

Some of his comments do indicate that he read the book, but other times,
you don't know where something came from. I suspect, after several
years in development, he has conflated the books with various script
revisions. I've only seen the movies, and I have to be careful about
remembering what's really in the book.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Argonath Question |

there are some interesting notions on gondor and the 'diminishing' of
the numenoreans in the history of middle earth, especially 'sauron
defeated'. at least for a while tolkien suspected that the gondorians
were so into towers because they hoped to catch a glimpse of the 'true
west'.

Okay, that didn't come out right. I meant, I've only _seen_ the movies,
as opposed to working on various versions of the story for several
years, and I have trouble with conflation.
But the sentiment is appreciated....<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Argonath Question |

Freud, however, had a different theory.

lol, good point - especially with respect to numenorean fertility in
those diminishing years!
