I nearly forgot to post this. It's the complete lyrics to the definitive
Thanksgiving song:

....as taught by me -- the chorus at least -- to several generations of
South London eight-year-olds. Nothing to do with Thanksgiving, but
because the tune and words can be taught in three minutes, while the
simple enjoyment lasts for years.

Best place we've heard "Alice's Restaurant" is on a college radio station in
the country-western wilderness north of Flagstaff, Arizona. Almost magic to
hear that come through in the middle of nowhere, and so disappointing every
time a depression in the road would start to take us away from the signal.

I saw it when it first came out. I can't remember much about it. Arlo Guthrie
plays himself. Officer Obie plays himself. There's a funny scene of the
physical exams at the draft board. On the other hand there's a lot of smug and
self-righteous hippie stuff.

And a lot of sad hippie stuff in which the attempts at magicalness seem lost more
than anything else. There's a gratuitous funeral with a kind of gratuitous guitar
solo that is nevertheless one of the few things I remember clearly from the film.

I didn't know that was Officer Obie playing himself. Wonderful.

And at least one recorded version of "Alice's Restaurant" is exactly
the same length as the deleted sections of the Watergate tapes. Go
figure.
