Post subject: Amazon: Marketplace vs. Advantage programs
Archived from groups: alt>publish>books (more info?)

Hello group,

I am a self publisher and just finished my first book. I plan on
having my printer ship the book directly to the customers. We are
going to list it with Amazon and BN.com and was desparately looking
for answers to a few questions, since Amazon's customer service seems
to be lacking.

I know the Advantage program is a 55% commission to Amazon and they
ship the book. The Marketplace is only a 15% commission and I ship.

Would my book be listed in the same way with each program?

Am I able to use the various marketing tools with the Marketplace
Program?

Would I be able to include "search inside the book" thru Marketplace ?

What are the disadvantages (I plan on shipping the orders) for a new
title to be listed through the Marketplace program?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Jeff Rutsein

You can do both: put it into the Advantage program and also list it as a
Marketplace item, perhaps with a discount, or inscription.

The majority of Amazon shoppers either don't look at the Marketplace listings
or would rather not deal with them. When they order from Amazon they can get
free shipping and a level of vendor quality which is sometimes lacking from
marketplace sellers. Most are reliable, but you hit one now and then who
isn't.

I sell a few used books there and also offer my own books both ways. Advantage
orders greatly exceed Marketplace orders, and even allowing for the better
margins with Marketplace there is more net with Advantage.
