Post subject: Amazon taking over EVERYTHING?
Archived from groups: alt>publish>books (more info?)

In the past two weeks I have been struggling to get answers out of
Amazon re. their small publishers' "Advantage" scheme, to have them sell
our products. I have learnt little from them. Indeed, their assistants
seem only capable of focussing on keywords in your enquiry, running them
through a search, and then pasting every reference produced by the
search into one hotch-potch of an "answer"!

Anyway, I tried yesterday to move on to two other big stores here in the
UK: Borders and Waterstones. I was surprised on typing into my browser
www.waterstones.co.uk
and
www.borders.co.uk
to find my name on the screen before me . . . on a welcome page to
Amazon!

Does anybody know if submission of product to Amazon now means automatic
submission of product to Waterstones and Borders, and maybe other chains
as well?

Sincerely,
Ellie.

I don't think so, at least not for the bricks-and-mortar Waterstones
and Borders stores.

Rather, I think that Borders and Waterstones (and perhaps some other
retailers) have hired Amazon to look after the web-commerce part of
their business. (Unlike, say, the Barnes & Noble chain in the U.S.
which runs its own website and ordering.)

I expect that you have entered your book into the local equivalent of
the US-based Books In Print database? If so, then perhaps your local
online bookstores are downloading the database as B&N,
Amazon, et al. do here?
