When I first saw "For the Honor of the Queen" in bookstores, when it
originally came out, I glanced at it given its low price, and then
quickly enough decided that this was not the sort of thing I would
enjoy.
But then, years later, I found a few of the books in the series at a
thrift shop, and gave it another chance. I ended up getting the whole
set because I really enjoyed them, finding Honor to be a very well-
written character that one felt for.
The comparison one person in that thread is making - "Sword of Truth"
in space - I find unbelievable. Terry Goodkind, in my opinion,
*deserves* the abuse that may be heaped upon him - I enjoyed the first
few books in the series, despite them being a tad heavy on the S&M,
but eventually they degenerated into political rants of obscure nature
and purpose.
Yes, I nearly missed the Honor Harrington series because David Weber
laid the Horatio Hornblower parallels on a bit too thick. I think that
At All Costs was something of a space-filler while DW gets things
ready - with Crown of Slaves, Shadow of Saganami, and their successors
- to bring HH into the real battle. But I think Honor Harrington is a
great read with perhaps a few minor problems, not the kind of junk
it's being called over there!
