Andre Norton, author of the popular science fiction/fantasy series,
Witch World, is dead at 93.
Norton died Thursday of congestive heart failure at her home in
Murfreesboro, a Nashville suburb.
Born Alice Mary Norton, she adopted the pen name Andre Norton because
she thought her books would appeal more to boys if she had a male name.
Norton wrote more than 130 books, the first in 1934 when few women were
writing science fiction.
In 1977, she was the first woman to receive the Grand Master of Fantasy
Award, and she won the Nebula Grand Master Award in 1984.
Her last complete novel, Three Hands of Scorpio, is set to be released
in April.
