If you'd seen the link... you'd see it *was* visual arts... it's a
painting by Jack Kerouac.

Thanks, Will. Fascinating. I didn't know Jack Kerouac was from Canada.

He wasn't. There was a large population of French speaking people living in
New England earlier in the last century; first and second generation
immigrants who had migrated from Qubec in the later part of the 19th century
mostly in search of jobs in the textile millls. That was the population into
which he was born (in Massachussetts).

And an interesting one at that. I can't make halos
or wings of the angel figure, but couldn't help
noticing the Christian symbolism in the treatment
of the windows. In light of all the interest in
Islam these days, have to wonder about that crescent
moon too.

The painting was made at least 40 years ago, also... taking into
account Kerouac's well-documented Anti-Semitism in later years, there
are other layers of meaning, also.

The apparent wings of the figure echo the laundry drying on
the line and flapping in the wind, curiously insisted upon
by being presented in three different places. The windows,
with their crosses, give light yet are themselves opaque:
we see nothing in them. The crosses remind me of the dark
openings in the faceplates of old suits of armor. From them,
and the dark fence of property below, the laundry, the angel
and the moon escape or yearn to escape upward.

That's Kerouac in a nutshell.

if you'd like more visual material on Kerouac i;d suggest
Jack Kerouac's Romnibus which is free to download on
www.homeoftheunderdogs .something (look it up),
about 90Mb. They've taken out the videos but there still
is a lot in there...drawings,photos,notebook scans and a whole novel...
