Folks --
I am looking for a copy of "Shadows Around Us" -- it is a collection
of authentic ghost stories by Arthur Morrison. Published in the UK
sometime in the late 19th century. Any and all leads would be
appreciated.

There is only one copy in the British Library
The Shadows around us: authentic tale of the supernatural.
MORRISON. Arthur
pp. 128. Simpkin & Marshall: London, 1891. 8o.
Which would suggest the book only made the one edition.
And so is presumably quite scarce and hard to find.
Not that a vendor, if you found one, need know that of course.
There are no copies listed on either -
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bookfinder.com/" target="_blank">http://www.bookfinder.com/</a>
Which is the main site which brings together books from a number
of Internet listing sources, including
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.abebooks.com/" target="_blank">http://www.abebooks.com/</a>
the largest single listing site.
or on
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://used.addall.com/" target="_blank">http://used.addall.com/</a>
another composite listing site.
While the only mention on Google is to this -
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.geocities.com/cnamuncura/m19.html" target="_blank">http://www.geocities.com/cnamuncura/m19.html</a>
Which features cursory information about the book.
And there's nothing showing on Ebay - a chance in a
million maybe, either I'm afraid.
So it would appear that you're going to have your work
cut out. Sorry not to be of any more help I'm afraid..

Where is the is nonsense?
The point about there only being the one copy in the BL Mr Stovall,
is that that is indicative of there being only the one edition
published in the U.K.
The number of copies held anywhere else in the World, over and above
those deposited in one of the U.K. Copyright libraries, the BL in this
particular instance, is totally irrelevant insofar as works published
solely in the U.K are concerned.
Or are you seeking to claim that there were further editions published
in the US as well?
Which you have somehow omitted to mention?
And so where exactly is the nonsense Mr Stovall?
Except in your rather precipitate and foolish intervention I would
imagine.
Of course Mr Stovall, the very idea that you should seek to
withdraw your remark, or even deign to reply in any way at all,
is probably more than can be expected of you. At least if
previous experience is anything to go by.

I withdraw nothing. So the British Library only has one copy. We do
as well here at the Ransom. It perhaps reflects the poor state the
British Library's collection.
You may note the copies in the U.S. were published in the U.K.. No
where did I suggest it was published in the U.S..
Would you carry to continue this with grass before breakfast?

....
And it might in turn be suggested to you Mr. Stovall, that your
apparent inability to comprehend a fairly straightforward argument,
maybe reflects the rather poor state of your reasoning ability
there at the Ransom.
The relative state of the holdings of these various libraries isn't
what's in question here Mr Stovall as you might have been expected to
realise. What's in question is the likely rarity of this particular
title and nothing else.
In my original post I stated as follows -
" There is only one copy in the British Library
The Shadows around us: authentic tale of the supernatural.
MORRISON. Arthur
pp. 128. Simpkin & Marshall: London, 1891. 8o.
Which would suggest the book only made the one edition."
So the fact that there is only one copy in the British Library
suggests that there is only one edition.
So can I ask you, do you agree with that statement?
Yes or no?
And further may I ask you which of the following two factors is
likely to be more indicative of the likely rarity of a title ?
a) The fact that it only ever went into one edition
b) The fact that four copies are held by US libraries.
In other words, what possible relevance has the fact that the book is
held by four separate libraries in the US to do with the OP's original
query? Which concerned the likelihood of obtaining a copy of the book
which would itself depend on its rarity?
....
> You may note the copies in the U.S. were published in the U.K.. No
> where did I suggest it was published in the U.S..
....
Which merely confirms the supposition that the BL holding presumably
represents the only edition of the book to ever be published. The point
being, to repeat it once more - the fact that the book went into only one
edition, as indicated by the single BL copy is far more indicative of
its likely rarity - which is the question of most interest to the OP -
than any number of copies held by US libraries.
....
>
> Would you carry to continue this with grass before breakfast?
.....
That phrase I'm afraid, means absolutely nothing to me.

It is a very scarce book... However, I do happen to know that it is
scheduled for reprinting by Battered Silicon Dispatch as part of a
three-volume collection of Morrison. You might Google a listing for
Battered Silicon Dispatch or query their primary distributor Charles
McKee. Pay no attention to the useless pontificatings by the
Adams-troll.
Cheers,

Very good Pelan.
A positive contribution to the NewsGroup from you for a change.
If a little late, as per usual.
Although I think you'll find that your contributions - few as they are
anyway - might carry somewhat more authority - a difficult enough task
as it is, I'd imagine, in your case - if you didn't also try and use them
as an opportunity to settle old scores.

Sorry, Adams... Unlike you, I don't sit glued to the computer 24/7. I
saw a query that I was able to help with and responded. Do you have a
problem with that?

I have no "old scores" to settle. You are remarkably unimportant to
me. I simply noticed that you had (as usual) seized a query on a
particular subject to blast off into the aether on one of your
peculiar tangents and warned the OP accordingly.

Given that I just wrote "Very Good Pelan", I'd imagine that most readers
with even minimal comprehension skills, would immediately recognise
that question as being somewhat superfluous.
Except you that is, for some unaccountable reason.

Michael:
Don't waste your breath or energy on John Pelan - the man is a liar
and a control freak who breaks every rule to further his own
interests. I had thought he might have changed his ways after a series
of spectacular blunders elsewhere but I can see that I might have to
dust off the Pelan waxwork and put it back on display at my Chamber Of
Horrors......
Let's see....he's created sock puppets to infiltrate other people's
Yahoo groups whilst arguing that to do so is wrong; he's accused
innocent people of infiltrating his own Yahoo groups; oh, he once
claimed that I would be spending Christmas in "Norfolk jail" because I
quoted Alan Rickman at one of his mates after said mate insulted my
mother by way of polite discussion; plus of course there was his
notorious claim that the Sax Rohmer estate would be suing me for
writing a Sax Rohmer parody (two years on still heard nothing); legion
are the lies and foul slanders that have spectacularly blown up in his
face; and then of course there is the habitual foul language. Oh, and
let's not forget what his preoccupation with sadistic pulp literature
reveals about his subconscious.
It seems pretty clear to me that you replied pretty usefully to the
original enquiry, but that Pelan fears or hates you, hence his
vaudeville routine of branding you a troll.
Talking of vaudeville routines, you might be interested in issue two
of Weirdly Supernatural which has just come out, featuring a notorious
vaudeville villain called Prof Peliarty. No relation of course, but
its proving to be one of the most popular items in the journal.

Oops, I forgot to say that Pelan and one or two of his cronies have
been trying to brand me a troll elsewhere. Their Hitler Youth Movemnet
tried to inflict a new FAQ on the group (which failed) after failing
to get a popular mandate to have me officially branded 'troll'. They
then spent a very silly week chasing me round with a silly troll FAQ
which promptly backfired upon them, so they've stopped it. Now they
are quietly nursing their bruised egos. Meanwhile, general discussion
goes on, proving that those frustrated egocentric few who wish to
incite witch-hunts are the biggest threats, not the alleged witches.

....
As it happens, Mr Pelan did in fact provide some useful and novel
information to the O.P. regarding a possible reprint of the Morrison
title. As to Pelan fearing or hating me - I don't really feel he knows
enough about me to do that. How he may view certain of his direct
competitors in the publishing world such as yourself, is of course
another matter entirely. But then I'm lucky enough, not to be
numbered among those, thank goodness.

As far as I can see Mr Barker, Pelan seems incapable of successfully
arguing his way out of a wet paper bag, let alone hassling anyone. It
can only be hoped for his sake, that he put up a rather better show as
a nightclub doorman.

No Mr Barker, from what I can see, and with all due modesty, it is me
who should be giving you the lessons. Not the other way around.
Other than that, as to what Pelan may choose to do, or not do, outside
of Usenet, I regard as being his business alone, and totally irrelevant
to the matter in hand. Namely, providing him with a steady supply of wet
paper bags.
all the best

This is a standard reply to someone whose vendettas have darkened the
tone of alt.books.ghost-fiction for many years.
Reasoned argument and factual refutation have failed to stop his
attacks. Even a cursory glance at the newsgroup's archives will
readily establish that fact. Therefore, many long-time contributors to
this group have agreed to share this message as the most appropriate
response to his accusations.
Anyone who cares to separate fact from false allegation is welcomed to
contact the people, societies, businesses, and publications that are
his constant targets.
We look forward to hearing from you. >> Stay informed about: Arthur Morrison |
