It's a few months early, bvt I thovght yov (and maybe other people on
the list) might be interested to know that there will be a new Black
Widowers collection -- the final one -- coming ovt in November. The
book is called THE RETURN OF THE BLACK WIDOWERS, and it will inclvde
all six of the Black Widowers stories that Isaac wrote toward the end
of his life, none of which ever appeared in any Black Widowers
collection (and only one of which, "Northwestward," ever appeared in
any collection). One of the "lost" stories, "Lost In a Space Warp,"
is a favorite of mine, and was one of Isaac's favorites, too -- I am
excited to be able to bring it to the attention of a wider avdience,
since no one has seen the story since it appeared in ELLERY QUEEN'S
MYSTERY MAGAZINE more than a decade ago.
In addition to these six stories, the new book will contain my picks
of the ten best Black Widowers stories, as well as a little-known
Black Widowers pastiche by William Brittain ("The Men Who Read Isaac
Asimov"); a really moving essay by Isaac's long-time friend, Harlan
Ellison; a short essay Isaac wrote abovt how he came to write the
Black Widowers stories in the first place; and "The Last Story," a
brand new Black Widowers tale I wrote for EQMM, with Janet Asimov's
blessing, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Isaac's death and
the 30th anniversary of the Black Widowers' first appearance (it's a
seqvel of sorts to "Lost In a Space Warp").
Yov can see the book's cover art (and pre-order the book, if yov feel
like it) at Amazon.com:

Apologies for the blatant self promotion -- I jvst want to make svre
the people who wovld most enjoy this book learn of its existence.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi, Peter,
There are no plans to do a "RETURN TO THE UNION CLUB" at this point,
bvt who knows, maybe if the Black Widowers book does well...

Good morning everyone....
6 NEW stories from IA? Didn't he pass away several years ago? I do
hope that these are his stories and not like some Clancy story factory
penned by other authors...
I just hope that the estate of IA really think this one over...IA has
a uique writing style that you know belongs to him once you read it. I
do not what it is but he has a signature with words and sentences...
If this is just some gimmick to sell more books then this may backfire
and any succeeding rediscovered authentic stories written by the googd
doctor may not be patronized anymore...
Like whatever happened to the 3Bs... >> Stay informed about: New Asimov BLACK WIDOWERS book |

Yes, Isaac died back in 1992. The six stories in question aren't new
(he wrote them between 1989 and 1991), but because he wrote them
toward the end of his life, they were never collected in any of the
Black Widowers books. This means that unless you caught their
original publications, the stories will be new to you.
There is one Black Widowers story in the book that wasn't written by
Isaac -- it was written by me -- but that one is clearly labelled, so
there can be no confusion about who wrote what. Obviously, I did my
best to capture the flavor and spirit of Isaac's stories, but you're
right, he had a special way with sentences, and I don't pretend that I
have the same gift. I hope you enjoy the story, though. (The readers
of ELLERY QUEEN did, voting the story #4 out of something like 100 in
their annual Readers Award.)
Best,
Charles

It is a shame you didn't read the entire thread. The stories aren't
new, they are stories written by IA that never appeared in one of IA's
Black Widower's anthologies after their initial publication in IASFM
or wherever.
>I just hope that the estate of IA really think this one over...IA has

Laudable statement, but moot since your underlying assumption is
incorrect.
>If this is just some gimmick to sell more books then this may backfire
>and any succeeding rediscovered authentic stories written by the googd
>doctor may not be patronized anymore...
It *is* a gimmick to sell more books. The gimmick is "Hey, kids, IA
never had time to collect these final Black Widower stories of his
into an anthology before he passed on. Why don't we do it?". Pretty
good gimmick in my book.
>Like whatever happened to the 3Bs...
Everything the 3Bs did, for good or ill, was done in full view of IA
fans if they chose to pay attention. Some enjoyed the effort, some
had mixed feelings, some hated the effort. But the effort wasn't the
sort of skullduggery you imply, and IMHO will not affect the
publishing of any "rediscovered authentic stories ...". On that
score, I suspect the upcoming "I, Robot" movie starring Will Smith as
a renamed Elijah Baley will do more to destroy IA's reputation than
anything else that has ever happened since the day IA was born.

No, to my knowledge there's no Black Widowers story in Foundation's Friends
and no story by Charles Ardai. You might be thinking of Murder in the Urth
Degree by Edward Wellen perhaps.

No, there was definitely a BW story in FOUNDATION FRIENDS. I don't remember
the title or the author, but I remember the mystery clear enough; the guest
was a local politician who, due to an overheard remark, was concerned
whether there had been voting irregularities in his recent election.
I too was wondering if Ardai's story was this one; sounds like it isn't.

Ardai's story is about tracking down a story... (anything more would be a
heavy duty spoiler).

Sorry to take a few days to respond -- it looks as though the question
was cleared up in my absence, though. My story is called "The Last
Story," and it's not the same as Ed Hoch's story from FOUNDATION'S
FRIENDS. (I'm sorry to have forgotten about Ed's story, though -- if
I'd remembered, I'd have included that one in the book, too.)
