In a story set in the Man-Kzin Wars era in Larry Niven's Known Space
universe, entitiled "Cat's Paw" by Hal Colebatch, in "Man-Kzin Wars XI",
I was quite blown away to see one of the characters (A scientist named
Dimity) described as an Asperger's! Since most of the story occurs in
the year 2430, I had thought that Asperger's and other autism spectrum
disorders would have long since been cured!

Spoilers below for "Cat's Paw":

In this story, Dimity (who is famous for having decycphered a hyperdrive
manual in time to save humanity from being conquered by the lion-like
Kzin) has teamed up with a Kzin named Vaemar to look for Protectors
(humanoids who are very smart and aggressively attack anything that
might threaten their descendants. 2.5 million years ago, some
Protectors tried to colonize Earth, but died for lack of the tree of
life root they needed to stay alive. The breeders they brought evolved
into humanity) on the planet Wunderland (in the Alpha Centauri system).
However, a Protector and its Kzin slave kidnapped the two to a Hollow
Moon. When Dimity's association with a Kzin is questioned, a UNSN
colonel named Guthlac says that Dimity is a superlatively high
functioning Asperger's. When Dimity makes up her mind, the only way to
stop her is to break her mind.

In the Sol system, yes, due to advanced medical research and the strict
breeding laws enforced by the ARM. However, due to the ravages caused on
many worlds by the Man-Kzin Wars, that process was interrupted before it had
barely started. In fact, there are several references that on Wunderland
life had regressed in many ways due to the war and many afflictions thought
long gone had returned.

Dimity was born on We Made It, which wasn't invaded by the Kzin during the First
Man-Kzin War, so wasn't disrupted by that war.

Sorry, but that's not true. Dimity first appears in Man-Kzin Wars 10,
and she is born on Wunderland. Her childhood is described, and she is
very much Aspergers (also mathematical genius). She leaves Wunderland
for We Made It on an interstellar ship which barely escapes the kzinti
attack. In MKW 11 she returns to Wunderland aboard an FTL ship long
after the war has ended.

All true, but a number of colonists left Sol in part to avoid the breeding
laws that helped to stamp out inherited afflictions. In addition, the
transmission of new medical breakthroughs via radio and unmanned ships were
stopped after the first war began. Again, there are several short (in
passing) references to all of this in several of the Man-Kzin Wars
compilations.

Is this character the Dimity Carmody of earlier Hal Colebatch stories?
(I haven't read M-KW XI yet...) If so, she was born on Wunderland,
escaped [brain-damaged] to We Made It during the Kzin invasion, and
returns to Wunderland after the liberation. (All in M-KW X, specifically
"One War for Wunderland" and "Music Box".)

The Outer Hebrides weren't invaded in World War Two, so they can't have
been affected by that conflict.
Or maybe not.

We Made It is a lot further away than the Outer Hebrides.
