Hey guys,

A couple of weeks ago, Athena was called for an interview concerning
gifted placements for High School, which she starts in January of
2008. I'm happy to say that they have offered her a place in the
Gifted class! This is such wonderful news, as it puts her in a
guaranteed Out Of Area placement to the best school in the area
instead of being placed in the closest (and worst) school. Even
better, it guarantees ISHTAR a place in the same school (but not the
gifted program - she'll have to test for that next year) for High
School.

I'm so proud of my clever daughter.

Az

I suppose naming her after a goddess of wisdom didn't hurt?

Well, that certainly says a lot about your raising her as well.

That is great.

Today we had our primary elections. We have 5 people, among 11 total,
who are trying to reduce the school budget by eliminating things not
mandated by the state. Things like sports, music, art, computers, and
busing in students to school. If this was a card game these people would
be playing lowball - the worst hand is the 'winner'. If they get in our
entire school district will be 'the worst' school.

That's great!

I remember your worries about your girls getting challenging
enough schooling.

for a PhD! I hear that women computer scientists are nice folks...

<nodding> I'm lucky. My kids are self-starters and don't hesitate in
setting themselves extension work when they finish the set work. But
still - the challenge they get at school right now is not much,
compared to their ability. The gifted program is brilliant and should
give them so much more! The competition was fierce - 466 applicants
for 90 places over 3 schools - so getting a place was amazingly
wonderful.

><thinking way, way, waaaaaaaaaayyyy ahead> Maybe Athena should go

PhD is very much something she is considering, but not in computer
science. Her tastes run to Engineering with plans to become a
Robotics Engineer in the future. Ishtar wants to be a Forensic
Anthropologist - those clever folks who can take a skull and build a
face back on it, aiding in identification of long-dead victims of
crime (among other things). Both of them realise that to make these
dreams will mean a lot of hard work but they think it would be
worth-while! With their Daddy (PhD in Tachyon Physics) as a example,
they know it's do-able by Real People!

I'd agree with you about women computer scientists. One of my best
friends is feverishly writing away at her dissertation. She's going
to make an Awesome Doctor.

Whoooeeeee.

And I'm sure their teachers will enjoy them; kids who really want
to learn makes it possible to be much more ambitious about lesson
plans. ;>

Welllllll... as a computer geek, I am, of course, bound to insist
that robots *are* computers (with, like, wheels attached), and so
the study of them falls into computer science.

I hear mechanical engineers have a different idea, but who cares
about their opinion?

[Oh, boy, am I going to get into trouble if any of my mechanical
engineer friends read that...]

I think Ishtar's ambition sounds very cool -- but I have never,
personally, been very fond of squishy things that smell bad, as
dead humans tend to do. I'll stick with my nice, clean,
smell-free computers. :>
