Hi There,
Loved the thread, and thought I'd take the suggestion and start a new thread to
name other authors we like besides Clive. My two other top faves of modern
Bizarre Fiction are Jeff Noon (Vurt) and China Mieville (Perdido Street
Station). Hi praise to both. Each very original in it's own right.

Haven't read Jeff Noon but really enjoyed Perdido Street Station and The
Scar by China Mieville. The second book is set in the same world but instead
of being confined to the one huge city it is a journey across the planet
taking in all sorts of bizarre sights along the way. I would highly
recommend it, especially if you enjoyed Perdido. Would also agree with
others on the list that Neil Gaiman's American Gods is well worth a try.

Well,
Since i'm only like 24365798 days late, I'll chime in quietly.
My favorite authors besides Clive are:
Caleb Carr
Quinn Fawcett
Stephen King
Robert Heinlein
Katherine Dunn
Neil Gaiman
who else am I forgetting? hm.... I mean I like a lot of authors but these
are the few that I will own everything they have and would read anything
they put out. Even if it's toilet paper reviews.
(granted, tho, heinlein is dead and probably won't be writing anything more)
ahhhhh...

I am new to this group, but thought I would chime in here. I like the
following authors (my list is much broader, so I will try to trim it here):
Stephen King
Robert R. McCammon ("Speaks the Nghtbird" was excellent)
H.P. Lovecraft
Edgar Allen Poe
Richard Matheson
Michael Moorcock
Joyce Carol Oates
I have recently discovered Stephen Dobyns and am currently reading "The
Church of Dead Girls."

Speaking of "The Apocrypha", I just ordered it recently, and apparently the
name has been changed to "The Devil's Apocrypha". Just FYI.

if it don't say it, it is mephisto here...
I really like Kathe Koja. Kinda poetic, horrific, sci-fi'y kinda girl. 'Bad
Brains' and 'Strange Angels'
Stephen King is gawd.
Albert Camus, 'The Fall'. Very dry, but good on a dreary day.
Richard Laymon, if only for a light read. You will get sick of tight powder
blue sweaters in a hurry. Even if they are spattered in blood and semen...
Billy Shakespeare, "Titus Andronicus" (I sure hope the spelling police are
not reading this)
more later....

Hey, I remembered! I wish everyone in the world could read William Pater
Blatty's "Twinkle, Twinkle Killer Kane"
It is the best book in the world, and I want it adapted into a screenplay
tout suite, tout fini!
Don't expect twirly head Exorcist gags either, this one goes for the throat.
Actually, it is a comedy. Not horror at all.

Um didn't Blatty make this into a film himself as The Ninth Configuration?

By Reason of Insanity by Shane Stevens is a really good book about a serial
killer, one of my favourites.
