G.K. Darby, director of the New Orleans Bookfair, is proud
of the line-up he has assembled for the third annual
Bookfair on Saturday, October 30: "Between Loompanics, AK
Press, and Last Gasp, we feel like we've got book
publishing's 'axis of evil' tour for Halloween."
Those are just three of the dozens of counterculture
publishers that will be showcasing their warez at the
k00lest bookfest in Amerikkka. "We put the X in bookeXpo,"
says director Darby, whose Garrett County Press recently
scored a hit with The George W. Bush Coloring Book, by
Karen Ocker. The New Orleans Bookfair is unlike any book
fest you've ever seen. For starters, alcoholic beverages
are not only permitted, they're required. The food is great
and so's the music. Eye candy includes pierced people, hip
fashion, protest art, and row upon row of scandalous books
and angry zines.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana will be
staffing a "wailing wall" where people can express their
opinions about renewing the Patriot Act. AuthorViews will
be shooting free two-minute videos and posting them on the
web. There will be readings, rants and interviews in an old
schoolbus. In the center of it all, Babylon Lexicon will
host a juried exhibit of art books.
The Bookfair takes place Saturday, October 30, 2004, from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Barrister's Gallery, 1724 Oretha
Castle Haley Boulevard. Admission is FREE. And that's just
the book part! The p-a-r-t-y starts Thursday, October 28,
and ends sometime in November. See the web site for an
incomplete listing of ancillary mayhem:
