One of the main things that popped into my mind was his emphasis on
certain plants; rubber trees needed for rubber, cotton needed for cloth,
etc as well as the later need for food animals.
In such a limited environment I would thing rubber and plastics (and
lubricants) could be derived from soybeans and/or peanuts, etc and of
course tofu (while monotonous) is a better use of resources than beef or
mutton production.
I also thought a way of getting around the lack of water issue might be
to redirect a meteor or comet to impact on a barren part of the surface
to be mined for resources. Of course many have done so over the ages but
the early ones have 'evaporated' away. One of the 1st things we should
do on getting back on the moon is to survey for resources.
