Have just finally completed the Last Chronicle, and don't think I've
been so affected by a novel in a long time as I was by two things in
this:
The confirmation of what we all feared regarding Lily Dale and Johnny
Eames; and
The inevitable fate of Septimus Harding, who was indeed the finest of
men.
I'm afraid to say I cried like a baby.

Hmm, well I must say I didn't cry over Lily Dale, in fact I was mightily
pissed off. At Trollope, for bringing poor Johnny Eames back only to kick
sand in his face again. Lily Dale can go to hell for all I care.
And anyway, what's the deal with women in Victorian novels who, once they've
given their heart, can never give it again? Thackeray and Dickens also
peddle that line of baloney (the dreadful Amelia in VF, for example). I'd
expect better from Trollope, who's usually pretty good with women
characters.

It was, apparently a thoroughly accepted point of "wisdom" for a few
generations. A metaphor on virginity, I suppose.

Accepted by characters in books, sure. But did people really act that way in
real life? "I'm terribly sorry, Cedric, but my heart was broken by a cad who
jilted me in my youth and therefore I have to spend the rest of my life as
an old maid, which by the way is a fate worse than death in the Victorian
era."? >> Stay informed about: Barsetshire Chronicles |

Terrific performance by Helena Bonham-Carter in the movie, though. She must
have had something to work with from the book (which I haven't read)?

I dunno. I didn't see the film. We should really discuss this further.

Wouldn't that be like the blind leading the deaf?
