No price on dust jacket is a dead giveaway for a book club edition,
right?

Yes, in the case of your Bachman book, and for any book published in the
US by a large commercial publisher for distribution to the trade. But
there are exceptions, where an unpriced book can be the publisher's
edition: Books from private, university or specialty presses;
large-format art or other coffe-table books; and textbooks.

In the past, others have mentioned here that some publishers in Canada &
the UK (and perhaps elsewhere) were considering using unpriced jackets
on all of their trade books in order to have more flexibility in making
price changes, but I don't know if that's actually happened.

Book club edition again. Marked about $30 at the local thrift store, who
plonks that price on anything they recognize. Wink

With the zillions of copies of Stephen King books, why are they always
*hot" ? I mean overpriced at thrift stores, charity sales, etc. ?

The US price is often included as a part of the bar code on the back
cover, but I have seen one case where the bar code differed from the
stated price by a dollar.
