There are, fortunately enough, so many good books that your request is a
bit broad

. Is there a specific age group you have in mind, or perhaps
a specific period or focus that you'd like to explore?
You can find some bibliographies on the web--I just found one of the
longer ones at
<http://www.springfieldlibrary.org/reading/blackhistorykids.html>. You
can also check the ALA site <http://www.ala.org> for winners of the
Coretta Scott King Award.
Some titles that come immediately to mind are:
Marilyn Nelson's _Carver_, a truly brilliant yet accessible and touching
biography in poems of George Washington Carver.
Doreen Rappaport's _Martin's Big Words_, a concise but compelling
biography of Martin Luther King for readaloud and early readalone
Laban Hill's _Harlem Stomp!_, a lively n overview of the Harlem
Renaissance
Dennis Brindell Fradin's _My Family Shall Be Free!_, a story of Peter
Still's journey out of slavery--and journey back to retrieve his family
....and that's only nonfiction and just off the top of my head.
