Hey peoples.
Its been a long long time since I've posted or even checked the messages
on this group. I joined way back in 2001 because I loved Anne Rice
books, and I still do, and I was looking to talk about those books with
people of like minds. What I found on the group was a mish mash of
negative comments, out and out attacks on Anne's recent work, and
somewhere between all this, a few genuinely thought provoking and finely
written posts.

Anne has finally decided to call it a day with the VC and some might say
that more than 20 years is enough for anyone to entertain such a huge
and diverse audience...And it is unfair of anyone to think that the
quality and frequency of Anne's work could keep up the same energy and
passion. Bits of Anne's life have found their way into the Chronicles,
and you could just tell that Anne's attitude towards these books had
changed. The books were spawned out of her grief for her daughter, and
became something more to millions of people around the world. Now that
her beloved Stan has died (Who as we know was the inspiration for the
Brat Price) I think its fair to assume that the books have come full
circle, that there would be no cartharsis for her now that the real
Lestat is dead.

For me, Blackwood Farm was absolutely wonderful, a return to form. It
was sprawling, passionate and impulsive. It was as if was written in a
deliruim. It seemed as though Lestat was passing the torch to Quinn,
saying "They're yours now. Take care of them. They need your stories."
I thought, this is the begginning of a new era for the Chronicles, that
Anne would, through the renewed energy of writing Blackwood Farm, return
things back to the way they were. When she announced Blood canticle
would be her last "full" VC book I was crushed, then I put it in
perspective. She's written non vampire fiction before, including my all
time favorite, Cry to Heaven, and she's taken the Chronicles as far as
she wants to take them at present.

I think her fans will appreciate anything she does next, even if it does
not involve the occult. I fully support her in every way. Her life is
undergoing a dramatic upheaval, and all we can do is whine because she
is no longer writing about vampires.
If she can move on so can we.

I'm so glad someone else adored Cry to Heaven! I also adored her book about
the "angel" and the Jewish faith (name is eluding me right now). Her writing
drew me when I read The Witching Hour nearly 10 years ago now. From there I
became enthralled with many of her books. Some of the VC books I disliked
and floundered whilst trying to read them, others were brilliant.

The last two published - Blackwood Farm and Blood Canticle renewed my
enthusiasm for her talent.

Just brilliant!

i think you're absolutely right. A lot of her other work is brilliant and
it's not fair to expect her to carry something on which is personally
difficult.
