Well what can I say? after carefully reading previous posts about this book
on here making sure I steered clear of any spoilers I wasn't expecting a
lot but I was definitely not prepared for what I read.
As previously stated the book starts off with Anne attacking her reader's
not liking MD (I myself enjoyed it). Then it moves on to Lestat telling us
about his desire to be a Saint. Now I could happily accept Lestat's new
found faith. Seeing as the Brat Prince was given a guided tour of Heaven
and Hell by the Devil himself I think it's completely believable that he
may well take up his old beliefs with a renewed vigor. But it all seems so
transparent somehow. Like Anne is trying to make sure everyone knows how
she feels about religion and is constantly shoving it down our throats.
2 or 3 chapters through this book I found myself apalled at Lestat's new
found surfer lingo. The narrative sounds like it could quite easily have
come from Beverley Hills 90210. Where's the old charm and beautiful
language that made me rush home from the library to immerse myself into
Anne's newest writings?
I've just got past the part in the book where Lestat Exorcises Patsy from
the swamps surrounding Blackwood Farm and I'm still waiting for something
to happen. This book as the feeling of an episode of a series that has been
axed that has been put together half heartedly to neatly tie up any loose
ends so that the reader/viewer doesn't feel cheated.
For me Lestat has lost his voice and I for one am glad that Anne has
decided to end the Vampire Chronicles.

I hated it, and was glad to see her acknowledge just why it was so
unreadable to some of her fans. Whether she agreed or not is immaterial, at
least she's aware.

Lestat wanting to be universally revered? Not a stretch for me. He tried
rock star, now he dreams of being Pope. The ego on that vamp!

Grown out of in QotD, when he struggled to connect with a mass audience, and
saw how horrid the old ways really were? Don't her plots have underlying
meanings? They're not just events, they're symbols of her world view.

Why do people refuse to let the characters evolve? This story wasn't set in
Marius' time, or in Lestat's time, or in Louis' time. It was set in our
90210-inflected world, quite squarely. Even Julien can no longer keep up.

The central events of the book occcur in Rowan's garden, and on the Taltos
island.

Though I thought Body Theif was decent.

I have to agree with Ben. In the former Chronicles, Lestat sounded
like a self-assured, independent vampire who would not let anyone's
"rules" stop him from doing what he wanted. His rebelliousness
came from strength of character.

In Blood Canticle, he sounded like a arrogant, spoiled teenager.
What rebelliousness he had came from petulance.

I liked the book, I was a little surprised that Louis was left out of the
book, but over all, as a last book, I was pleased with it.

I enjoyed the book as well, but didn't think Lestat's voice was
consistent with previous novels. As a whole, I think the book was
about average for a VampChron, which makes it enjoyable for me Smile.

I was a little disappointed that the ending of the series wasn't
a bit more ... EPIC. I would have liked to have had the more
ancient vampires involved. Even as a culmination of Lestat's own
evolution as a vampire, it seemed lacking. I must admit, I didn't
see Lestat as experiencing any great epiphany - even in the face
of what happened in MtD.

Blood Canticle did wind up some of the loose threads from Blackwood
Farm, (as well as other threads that I won't mention, to avoid
spoilers), but I was hoping for more links back to some of the
events in earlier books, given that this was the last.

Peter,
who would still like to see a Talamasca novel someday.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yeah! So would I Peter. I've always thought that they were a big part of
the VCs being so good. I was also disappointed that there wasn't more about
the other Mayfair family.
I do think the books have been going downhill for yrs now & it seems like
it's really gotten to be a chore for Anne to write them. I can't even image
what it would feel like to put on a bestseller & wonderful book like
Interview & then yrs & yrs later feel almost forced to continue with the
same characters. I feel that she's done alot for most of us by her prolific
writing & it's about time that she really does what she wants with her life.
I just stopped by here again to see if she'd published a new book yet.
Take care,
Bev

It's lovely to read that someone else agrees that Anne Rice should be
faithful to herself, instead of to "the faithful", her constant readers.

I'd love to see a Talamascan novel too one day, but where would she choose?
Would she recount the beginnings? the middle? now? the scope of HOW and what
to put in would almost be daunting I think.

I'd love to have her publish more, but even if she doesn't, for her to know
so many people appreciate what she has done is good too.

I see what you're getting at, but I think it's legitimate to criticize
someone's work if you can explain what bothers you. I wouldn't want
this group to become a forum for only positive comments.

Personally, I haven't been as impressed with Anne's more recent work,
especially when compared with her earlier VCs. As for _Blood Canticle_,
I guess I was particularly disappointed, as I was hoping for something
a little more, well, *epic* for the final VC.

Questioning an author's motivations for their work (i.e. "churning them
out for the money") is less supportable, I think, but free speech and
all that. In Anne's case, it seems clear to me that the direction of the
VCs has been something she's been in complete control of. While
publishing deadlines may have resulted in the books being a little less
polished - I said *may*; I have no evidence to support that idea -
I don't think Anne is just making up half-baked ideas to fill up a book.

So, disagree with nay-sayers all you like, but please tolerate them. Smile

Peter,
who wonders why he got all diplomatic all of a sudden.
