In a mythic land, a young hobbit discovers that a ring owned by his
eccentric uncle is in fact a source of ultimate evil that must be
destroyed.
An interesting one sentence summary of "Fellowship of the Ring". <g>
Also an interesting description of Bilbo!

Also, intriguingly, assumes that the reader knows what a hobbit is.
If you know what a hobbit is, doesn't that imply you already know
information in the one-sentence FotR? (If not more?)

Huh.
But, truly, how many Regular People spend much time with fan art
without also reading the related subject-of-fandom? Actual artists
are the main ones I can think of who would do that -- most people look
at fan art because they are fans of <subject-of-art>. So most folks
looking at pics of hobbits would be doing so because they are fans of
The Stories About Hobbits.
I guess I was generalizing. There's always a few folks who can
squeeze through the cracks and learn what hobbits are without learning
even a sentence-worth about LoTR. (Siblings of LoTR fans, perhaps,
who run out of the room when the fan-siblings starts babbling LoTR
trivia, but can't avoid seeing the big hobbit poster on fan-sibling's
bedroom door.)

I sometimes feel sorry for the tv guide writers (especially
for newspaper tv scehdules) trying to cram a movie's essence
into one short sentence. Sometimes they do well,
sometimes...well...not. My wife and I used to read the
descriptions, then try to guess the movie from that.
"Young man must leave home to fight in interstellar wars".
The only real clue was 'interstellar' aka Star Wars.
Western "Three gunmen seek treasure".

But wasn't there another movie... (off to consult IMDB)... ah, yes.
"The Last Starfighter". One of the very first movies in the "base it
on a video game" genre.
You just described the plot. :>

Well...it was more than "based on a video game;" the video game was
part of the story (what there was of one) itself.
Which starts another chain of thought: when was the first time that
an SF story included (even as an incidental part) what would now
be likely to be described as a "computerized battle simulation"? The
actual devices have existed for a long time (I had a 1957(?) issue of
_Signal_ magazine which featured a story about simulations of naval
warfare -- and had a picture of a stepper switch with perhaps 200-300
poles that sequenced the action, but the first story I recall was
Andre Norton's _Time Traders_ which I read in 1961 or thereabouts; it
had a short scene with a computer-driven display was used in battle
simulation.

me too. i just browse the galleries often having no idea what the
character is. and there is sooo many fantasy things i haven't even heard of
i'll often think the name of the character they used was original, only to a
few months later stumble into the fandom or another artist who drew the same
character with the same name. <!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Blurb for movie on TV |

another interesting blurb but this one from the radio.
it quoted 4 characters. after each quote from FOTR (sound directly from the
movie of characters speaking) some voice over would say the name of that
character. they got each one right except:
"Cast it into the fyah!" was Aragorn.
i guess this is also a story of incest.

yes.
it's what irritated me so at the State Fair.
i thought i was looking at original artwork.
i wasn't. the judges just had no clue.
then the same thing happened with the quilts and jewelry.
not an original to be found - just a bunch of people who can follow
directions.
