We have a paperback copy of The Discovery of Chocolate by James Rucie. All
the publication information on the inside would indicate it is a UK
paperback edition published by Harper Collins and on the inside there is a
number line and an ISBN number. However, on the back of the covers, instead
of an ISBN number and a price, there is a CN number. This would indicate to
me that it is a book club edition, but there is nothing else to say that
this is the case. Can anyone help?

Might it not possibly be an export edition?

On bookfinder there is a copy described as a "Proof Copy"
- whatever that may be in this context

HALCYON BOOKS
via Abebooks
[United Kingdom]

ISBN: 000710782X
Publisher: London: Harper Collins, 2001; Soft Cover.
Proof Copy. 8vo - over 7 3/4 " - 9 3/4 " tall.
ISBN:0-00-710782-x. This book is in fine condition.

on offer at $6.95

....

If you're really that curious, and you have no luck on here,
then perhaps if you phoned or emailed Harper Collins direct,
mentioning the CN number - whatever that is - they might be
able to help.

correction:
Er, an actual corrected Proof possibly? Mistakenly thought it
had been published in h/b in 2000.
oops.

Hi Michael,

Both Amazon and Addall have the hardback edition as 2001 but I think a CN
number usually means a book club, we have certainly seen it on BCA copies
with CN numbers, and that is what is so confusing.

Normally we would expect a hard back book with a CN number to have
publication information on the inside recognising the original publisher but
with saying book club edition published in association etc...

We wondered whether this was actually published by Harper Collins as a
regular p/b but then misbound for the book club market. However, this is
speculation only. We will take up your suggestion and contact Harper
Collins.

On a fun note, we bought a price reduced copy of a book about Herman Hess in
W H Smith as it was obvious that there had been a problem with the
registration on the printing of the cover. We thought that if someone wanted
to read the book they wouldn't mind a problem with the cover. It was odd
that it had an advert for Artemis Fowl but then who knows...? When we got it
home and checked it was a copy of Artemis Fowl with a Rudolf Hess cover...

Someone bought it on eBay for a little more than we paid for it so we got
our money back. With hindsight of course we should have stressed that it was
unique and made a lot of money!!! ;o)

Anyway, thanks for your input, it was useful.

Regards,

Graeme

the bookclub editions of her books, all carry a cn number.
most times there is a reference inside, but the cn number is the sign
indicating bookclub

Thanks Willem,

That's what we thought. Although, if I hadn't seen the CN number, there was
nothing else to indicate it was a bookclub edition. While it is of little
importance in this case as it is just a mass market paperback, I wonder if
people are selling "rare" hardbacks not realising they are in fact book club
editions?

Regards,

Graeme
