Howdy,
My niece is 11, but is reading on a college level, so I was
wondering if anyone could suggest some adult literature that's not too
"adult".
She loved Narnia, Redwall, Snicket, Harry, LotR; but we're trying to build
up a nice list for her.
Thanks in advance
God Bless
mike

The classics are always good. I was that age when I read Jane Eyre and
Wuthering Heights. Mave Binchy's work such as Circle of Friends would also
be a good one to read. Too Kill a Mockingbird is another by Harper Lee.
You may want to enquire with private schools, as they often place adult
fiction on required reading lists for their grade 7+8 kids. They could
probably suggest additional texts for her.

Is she interested in science fiction? If so the "Juveniles" (actually quite
grown up) of Robet Heinlein are worth a look. _Citizen of the Galaxy_ is my
particular favourite. Also _Double Star_, but don't bother with anything he
wrote after about 1960
The late Eric Frank Russell also did some good stuff, notably _Wasp_, _The
Great Explosion_ and _Men Martians and Machines_.
George R Stewart's _Earth Abides_ is certainly worth a read. So is Asimov's
_Pebble In The Sky_ , Poul Anderson's _After Doomsday_, Arthur C Clarke's _The
City And The Stars_, Jack Williamson's _Seetee Shock_, L Sprague DeCamp's
_Lest Darkness Fall_,Leigh Brackett's _The Long Tomorrow_ and just about
anything by John Wyndham

So do public schools.
I well recall being a reader like your niece. A child that age tends to read
all over the lot, so to speak: some at "grade level," some YA, some
classics. On the classical front, at that age I read and enjoyed Nicholas
Nickelby, The Black Arrow, Jane Eyre, and The Last of the Mohicans. (Kids
can have a greater tolerance for turgid writers like Cooper. <G>) Louisa May
Alcott is an ovious one.
There's lots of good YA stuff out there. One of my personal favorites is
K.M. Peyton. You might want to try her Flambards quartet, one of which won
the Newbery, or the Pennington books, which unfortunately are hard to come
by in the US.
There's also a lot of good historical fiction she might like. Margaret
Leighton, Elizabeth Speare, and Walter Edmunds spring to mind, as well as
any number of more contemporary authors.
Since she likes fantasy, consider Garth Nix, whose Sabriel/Lirael/Abhorsen
trilogy is excellent. Also Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials, starting
with The Golden Compass. Robin McKinley has written several excellent books,
which also have the advantage of strong female leads: "The Hero and the
Crown" and "The Blue Sword."

If she likes fantasy, Diana Wynne Jones should be just the thing.
Everybody's got their own favorites -- mine are Howl's Moving Castle,
The Nine Lives of Christopher Chant, and Archer's Goon. But almost
everything by her is good, and the best of her stuff is absolutely
first-rate.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Book Suggestions for 11 year old? |

Here's some of my suggestions:
The Perilous Gard and The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope
Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster
Owl in Love by Patrice Kindl
Agree on the K.M. Peyton recommendation. Hopefully in the USA some are
still available at the library.
The "Beany Malone" and "Katie Rose" series by Lenora Mattingly Weber
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
Anything at all by Rosemary Sutcliff
Up A Road Slowly by Irene Hunt (recently reissued, hooray!)
Goodnight Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian
The Thief and its sequel The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
Best wishes,
Anita >> Stay informed about: Book Suggestions for 11 year old? |

Sutcliff, of course! I can't imagine how I failed to mention her. Herriot
and Pope are great suggestions also.
I don't know the others--I'll have to add them to my own TBR list.

To add to Mike's list:
_Emergence_ by David R. Palmer
The protoganist is 11; the book is diary-style but the prose is very
condensed, so is a challenging read.

Pennington series - yes. Flambards - 1st & maybe 2nd is OK, but I wouldn't
recommend the 4th for an 11 year old.

Abhorsen trilogy seconded - my 12 year old loves them. My 12 year old
hasn't got to "The Hero and the
Crown" and "The Blue Sword", yes, but reading them as an adult, I thought
they were great.

I have to chime in for James Herriott and Garth Nix's Sabriel trilogy
too. She also might enjoy Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide series,
Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fforde, Agatha Christie, Laurie King's Mary
Russell series, and PG Wodehouse's Jeeves books. And has she tried
Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles and Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising
Series? Those are terrific too.
