Is there a MASTER LIST or MASTER DATABASE of all book titles where I could
enter a title and range of years to find ALL books published
under that title? I'm looking for a sci-fi book that I saw in 1982 in a
college bookstore. I foolishly didn't buy it because I thought it would be
easy
to get later. Unfortunately, I didn't memorize the author, or ISBN number.
To make matters worse, the title is "Alien Encounter" which is a pretty
generic title. The book that I want was just a straight science fiction, not
an anthology, or essay, and NOT about the UFO phenomenon. I also
remember what the cover looked like, and the plot, and a number of story
details. This is driving me crazy. Having the internet at my disposal
makes it so close, and yet so far. Any advice would be appreciated.

go to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.abe.com" target="_blank">http://www.abe.com</a>
They list 57 books under "Alien Encounter"....the one you want could well be there

There are a number of book finder sites that allow you to put in
keywords instead of, or in addition to, title/author. Try ABEBOOKS.COM
and search on as little of the title as possible (Alien Encounter(s)
doesn't seem to be the title) and one or more keywords. Then there is
always the SciFi newsgroup.

good luck

Amazon is probably the closest you'd get.

Sorry, I've just checked after reading your message. I put in the search
title. Of the 51 results that I got, a bunch of them were from the same
author. Some were titles which only contained the words ALIEN and ENCOUNTER.
All of the authors that were listed were authors who's
books I've already checked on-line. Sad The one that might come closest is
the Flanna Devin book "Alien Encounter" which is a straight sci-fi
story published in 1981 (it was 1982 or 1983 when I saw the story), but the
cover of the book that I saw on-line looked different. That doesn't
mean much since a cover can change in a year. But, the synopsis didn't sound
familiar either. Over course, the sysnopsis description can vary
too. At this point, the only option that I can think of is to send away for
the Flanna Devin book, read through it, and see if that's the one.

What about the Library Of Congress? Does anyone know if it has an on-line
search engine? I'm 99.999999% sure that I got the title of this story
right.

This is driving me insane! How can a book be so elusive in the Internet
age???
