Is this book suitable to read to a 3 year old?
It's been recommended to me as a classic childrens story.

Thanks.

I've had great experience reading it to 3 year olds. Most of them love it,
but if your child is sensitive, the monsters might be a bit scary.
Otherwise, absolutely read the book to your child!

Which book?

If you're too damned lazy to type the author and title, don't expect people to
spend their good money surfing the web to solve your silly little riddles.

Regarding "Where the Wild things are" This is a great book but
it can be scary for kids as young as three who do not understand the
fact that Max is dreaming. I've used it for story telling
with three and four year olds, but I have the soft toys
that depict Max and three of the wild things.
My grandson was scared of the Wild Thing on video when he was 3 or 4
and it is done using the book illustrations.
He wanted to watch it but needed me with him. He didn't mind the
other Sedak stories on the same video
e.g. "Pierre" and "In the night kitchen".

Going off the topic: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
was released here in Australia this last week and caused a
problem because of the film rating it was given. After two days
the rating was down graded and changed to PG
(Parent guidance required)
I saw it with my grandchildren yesterday and was disappointed.
The pictures in my head as I read it were so much better!

That's funny - I'm 31 years old, and have loved that book since I can
remember, but never once did I think Max was dreaming.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Possibly because he isn't, necessarily? I always read it "straight" as a
magical adventure, myself. (Anyone else remember _The Dragon in the Clock Box_?
I always thought the point of that book was that there really could be a dragon
in the clock box, but grown-ups tend to read it as the little boy's
imagination.)

I think _Outside Over There_ is much scarier, myself (especially the changeling
baby made of ice -- "the ice thing only dripped and stared"), and I read it as
an adult (or teenager, anyway, I forget how old I was when it came out).

It's the sleepy look on his face as he heads for his dinner that's always
given me the impression that he's just awakened, and so was dreaming.

I agree with you, but I'm not sure you've quite said what you meant to say.
If you are like me, you (like me) thought that Max was *imagining* (i.e.,
"mentally pretending") rather than *dreaming* -- an important distinction.

He's imagining (i.e. playing), not dreaming, like Calvin in Calvin and
Hobbes.

Unless of course (in both cases) it's actually REAL.
