Got a niece who was just diagnosed with diabetes. I've already seen
this:

http://www.diabetesbookstore.com/BookChars.htm

.... but my question is, other than the ones listed there, does a book
pop into your mind that is age appropriate for a fourth grader who
reads at or above grade level, and that has a character, preferably a
sympathetic, young, female one, with diabetes?

Other question -- any book with a younger female character who likes
to draw, paint, do other artistic stuff?

Any pointers very much appreciated.

I remember reading a book when I was in grade school called Don't Call Me
Sugarbaby. I think it was a Scholastic book, but I could be mistaken. A
quick search should turn it up. It's about a girl dealing with her
diagnosis.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It's by Dorothy Jean Harris. May be a little old for her...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I don't know the age group you are looking for, but a quick look at amazon,
for the very young:

Trick-Or_Treat: A Halloween Story for Kids Living With Diabetes by Kim
Gosselin
Rufus Comes Home by Kim Gosselin
A Magic Ride in Foozbah-Land by Jean Betschart-Roemer
The Dinosaur Tamer: And Other Stories for Children with Diabete by Marcia
Levine Mazur
Even Little Kids Get Diabetes by Connie White Pirner
Sarah and Puffle: A Story for Children About Diabetes by Linnea Mulder

A tip: go to amazon.com and use the advanced search, you can enter the
"Subject:"- diabetes
and then chosse a "Reader Age" to get books that are pertinent to the age
you are trying
to target.

Good Luck,
Phil<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
