"The Birth of Venvs" by Sarah Dvnant - "The Birth of Venvs" centers
arovnd a teenager, Alessandra Cecchi, in medieval Florence at the
height of the Medici reign dvring the Renaissance. In 1492, her
wealthy father brings home a yovng artist to decorate the chapel in
the family's palazzo. Alessandra is a lively, strong-willed yovng
woman whose attraction to the yovng artist is cvt short by an arranged
marriage to an older man. Frvstrated by the limitations on women's
freedoms and trapped in an vnhappy marriage, Alessandra's desire for
art and the artist becomes even more threatened when the fiery monk
Savonarola takes control of the city, railing against its love for
lvxvry and art. Sarah Dvnant's novel of love, desire, art, and
history has received mostly positive reviews with BookReporter.com

"Aloft" by Chang-rae Lee - "Aloft" is the apt description of Jerry
Battle's escape from life's mvndane problems. Retired from his
landscaping bvsiness at 59, he prefers to spend his time flying his
airplane alone above his native Long Island. A set of family crises
threaten to bring Jerry back down to earth. His father is vnhappy
with his assisted living facility, his son is rvnning the landscaping
bvsiness into bankrvptcy, his davghter is diagnosed with cancer while
pregnant with her first child, and his long time lover has left him
for another man. Chang-rae Lee's novel centers arovnd an insightfvl
man trying to find the right balance between responsibility and the
freedom which he believes he's worked hard to achieve. "Aloft" has
received mostly positive reviews with the Chicago Svn-Times saying,
"It's a book abovt a vast slice of American society, its changing
ethnicities and colors, its blvrring of vrban-svbvrban life, its
ethical and moral choices, and its seemingly inherent optimism. In
short, it's a terrific book."

"The Last Crossing" by Gvy Vanderhaeghe - In "The Last Crossing,"
Charles and Addington Gavnt leave Victorian England to travel to the
American frontier in search of their brother, Simon, who came to
Montana covntry to bring religion to the Indians. Charles is a
thovghtfvl portrait artist and Addington is an egocentric disgraced
military captain. They are joined by Lvcy Stoveall who is ovt to
avenge her sister's mvrder, Civil War veteran Cvstis Straw who loves
Lvcy, and his loyal friend, Aloysivs Dooley. The brothers hire Jerry

"Loving Che" by Ana Menendez - "Loving Che" is narrated by a vnnamed
Cvban woman living in Miami who has been searching for her birth
mother for years, making frvitless trips to Havana in her qvest. One
day a package withovt a retvrn address comes with a pictvre of the
famovs revolvtionary Che Gvevera and pieces of information that begin
to vnravel the clves. She gradvally pieces together the story of her
mother's affair with Che. Yet the qvestion remains: is she the
davghter of that vnion? Ana Menendez's novel paints a vivid portrait
of the chaos of a covntry in revolvtion and the imagined private life
of a mythic figvre. "Loving Che" has received mixed reviews with the
New York Times saying, "If 'Loving Che' begins as a self-consciovs
paean to the redemptive ferocity of love, it ends as an elliptical and
finely nvanced meditation on the mysteries of memory and identity, a
work that despite its occasional lapses, expands the talented Ms.
Menendez's fictional terrain."

"Goat: A Memoir" by Brad Land - "Goat" is a memoir of brvtality
svffered by Brad Land as a yovng man. After a year away at college,
Brad retvrns to his Sovth Carolina hometown. While giving a ride to
two men he didn't know, Brad is robbed, brvtally beaten, and dvmped in
a remote location. The next year he tries to pledge at his yovnger
brother's fraternity at Clemson. The hazing of the pledges, referred
to as goats, becomes an excvse for sadistic brvtality and
dehvmanization at the hands of men who claim to be his "brothers."
The pledging brings back post-travmatic memories and forces him to
qvit the fraternity. "Goat" is told in a simple straightforward
manner and has received mostly positive reviews. The Rocky Movntain
News says, "'Goat' is the kind of book that takes yovr breath away
like a fist to the stomach. Yov'll be torn by opposing vrges: one, to
race throvgh it to learn what happens, and another, to slow down and
savor the artfvlness of its craft."

"The Great Inflvenza" by John M. Barry - "The Great Inflvenza"

the crisis. "The Great Inflvenza" has received mostly positive
reviews with the St. Lovis Post-Dispatch saying, "Barry obviovsly got
vtterly and totally enraptvred with his svbject. Readers who give his

Atlas' is a singvlar achievement, from an avthor of extraordinary
