I'm writing an article for Pages that is half about what people wish
book stores would do. No, I don't mean making sure that your book is
always face out on the shelves. More like, gee, wouldn't it be great to
have a couple of standing desks with pens and some note paper, or more
chair space, a sky light, or what have you. Maybe it's services, maybe
it's products, maybe it's better latte. If you'd like to weigh in, drop
me an email at erikbsherman at yahoo dot com.

The most important improvement bookstores could make is hiring
sales people who read. Everything else is commentary.

Heard on NPR about 20 minutes ago: "The last time Philadelphia won
the Superbowl, Eisenhower was president." That's an unusual error
for them.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

That's the difference between large independent bookstores and
commercial chains in the UK. The former hire bookworms, the latter hire
people who don't understand why I want to order the Wordsworth Classics
edition when there's a Penguin Classics edition on the shelf.

Dillons used to be the exception. In fact, David Mitchell once worked
at the Derby branch IIRC.

My local used book store has a monthly quiz (which I can never get).
If you guess correctly, you can pull a paperback out of the bargain
bin. I also like bookstores that have a shelf of staff
recommendations. Gets me looking at something out of my usual line.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Also generally means that someone on the staff actually reads, which is
a good sign.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Wish list? Um, how about one of everything? Those things I don't want to
read or can't finish reading I can donate at various places around town.
