O'Gurus of Bookselling, Smile

How does one go about finding out if a book is being considered by
Hollyweird for a movie? Is there a site that regularly keeps track of
this sort of thing, or is finding out about these things kind of like
playing dice?

If you want to pay for it ($9.95/mo), The Book Standard service:
http://www.thebookstandard.com/bookstandard/search/booktofilm/index.jsp

The Internet Movie Database imdb.com is one place to look for
forthcoming releases, and to search for book titles to see if you turn
up any hits. Otherwise...well, it's the word of the day: Google. If
someone's bought the rights to book, or is working on a movie based on a
book, mention of it will turn up somewhere.

Of course, an option on a book doesn't mean the film will ever get made.
I've got a copy of _Roustabout_ by Michelle Chalfoun, which I got
signed back when it was first published in 1996, and then-non-felon
Winona Ryder had already optioned it. I'm still waiting...

On unrelated notes: On The Book Standard site mainpage, you'll find
mention of ABE's acquisition of FillZ http://www.fillz.com/ , and the
Book Industry Study Group's new comprehensive analysis of the used-book
business, which'll cost you *way* more than $9.95
http://www.bisg.org/publications/ubs.html .

Rumours are generally to be found in the "Hollywood Reporter"

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/film/index.jsp.

They do not go in straight lines. Robert Duvall bought rights to "The
Apostle" ten years or more before he got funds to produce it, continually
trying to make the "project" go.

This may give out potential films, hint at acquisitions and, once production
of a major film is undertaken, will give cast lists and other details. Not
complete, but normally movies in production will be listed.

It is spotty and many are delayed or never made after the option is granted.

Willow.

You can always subscribe to "Bookmarks" Magazine. There is a section
called "Movies from Books". Their website is
"www.bookmarksmagazine.com". It is a must for bookcollectors or
booksellers.

Hi Michael,

About the only way to know for certain that a book is going to be a
movie is to wait to see when the release date of the movie is
published.
Now, smart alec answers aside, what _CAN_ be done is to contact the
publisher to see if the rights have been optioned, and by whom (if
they will say), which might tell you something about how serious the
intent is in making a movie from a book.

Or not, as has been stated.

Case in point:

"A Boy and His Dog" has had the option continually renewed since the
first production hit the screen, much to the, umm, ah, 'annoyance' of
the author, who would like to re-do the film in a manner more to his
liking. But due to the bad feelings between the two parties, the
rights will more than likely be tied up until the various people die.
