Folks,

I'm planning a trip to Seattle and Portland (OR) in the fall.

Any tips on the best new/used bookstores in those cities? (I do know to
check Evelyn's lists, but wanted some current advice as well.)

TIA,

Jm

It would help a bit if I knew your areas of interest... For general
books, I'd certainly hit both Powell's locations in Portland, the
Seattle Book Center, Horizon Books on Capitol Hill... If you're
looking for SF, check Bob Brown & Associates next door to Seattle Book
Center. If Mysteries are your thing, it's worth a trip downtown to the
Seattle Mystery Bookstore. If you get a chance, mention some areas of
interest and I can be a lot more specific.

Cheers,

John

Warning: Take plenty of money if visiting the following place! This store
is one city block large and multiple floors.

I can NEVER go in there without buying too many books. (Sort of like going
to one of those cafeterias with lots of yummy treats...)

Also check out their rare books section.

Thanks for what's been posted so far. Indeed, mysteries and sf are my
major collecting interests, but I buy all sorts of things.

I've dealt with Bob Brown on line, and would be pleased to meet him in
person!

There used to be a great book store called Shorey's (sp) on 1st Ave that
moved to the new wing of the Pike Place Market. I hope it's still in
business; it was one of the best in the NW.

No, the demise of Shorey's is one of the great (but saddest) stories
in NW book lore. They operated right up to the end as though they had
no competition. What this means in a nutshell, was insultingly low
offers to estates, refusal to go pick up stock from same, and
completely ignoring the Internet until their last of operation. It was
bad enough that I could memorize where each book in the fiction
section was and return a month later to find that NOTHING had been
moved.

It's unfortunate, but Shorey's started to decline three decades ago
and the last ten years were spent as a quaint ghost of what it had
been. I still have fond memories of their downtown location and as a
child actually looking forward to going to the dentist as that meant a
trip to Shorey's as long as were downtown and $2 whole dollars to
spend on books. Wink The difference being that 35 years ago I could
walk in to Shorey's with $2 and come out with a hardcover or half a
dozen paperbacks that were of interest, whereas five years ago I could
walk in with $200 desperately wanting to buy something and leave empty
handed.

Cheers,

John

Bob's great guy, one of my best friends in the biz... If yo ask, he
might take you on a clamming expedition. (More strenuous than a book
hunt, you can eat the results!)

Cheers,

John
