My new volunteer job at the local FOL bookstore just landed me the following
book, which I picked up for $3:

Herman Melville's "Typee" in a Limited Edition (1962) printed by the West
Virginia Pulp and Paper Company (that's a new publisher to me, and I couldn't
find it in McBride's). The book is so Fine its like new, and whoever had this
did not even crack open the book. The case has only minimal shelf wear. I found
only one copy by this publisher (on Abebooks) and it was listed at $45.

Westvaco (now Mead Westvaco) publishes a series of annual limited, slipcased
editions, using their own specialty paper products, as Christmas premiums
for, I assume, employees and customers. "Typee" was the 4th in this
American Classics Series (search at ABE using only the title plus west* in
the Publisher slot, and you'll turn up about 19 copies, ranging from $12 for
an ex-lib sans slipcase, up to $65 for a VG slipcased copy).

In my baseball fiction collection, I have the 1994 Westvaco issue of Ring
Lardner's You Know Me, Al--a very attractive production, with illustrated
endpapers and full-color two-page title spread & chapter heads featuring
reproductions of old Cracker Jack baseball cards.

My bad: 5th in the series.

Jon,

Thanks for the information. After I sent my message, I wondered about this book
being a gift for employees/customers of the paper company, and indeed the
printing date is identified as "Christmas, 1962" which supports this. Do you
have any idea what the print runs might have averaged for these editions?
I had posted my copy for sale on Amazon, but I think I'll pull it and enjoy it
for awhile.

I don't. Although they seem to be consistent in identifying these as
"limited editions," they are, as far as I can tell, just as consistent in
declining to specify the limitation. If I had to pull a number out of the
air, just judging by the number available at ABE, I'd guess that print runs
were in the neighborhood of 1,000 to 1,500--but perhaps smaller for earlier
titles such as yours.

Re Typee, I have before me the very same, also found in new condition but
without the slipcase, and the full production information is given on the last
page, but no production numbers.

Mine was also found in a Salvation Army store, for $1.00, in the wilds of the
Deep South. Do you suppose there might be one in every thrift shop?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
