Post subject: British author mentioned recently in The New Yorker
Archived from groups: rec>arts>books (more info?)

In one of the fairly recent issues of the New Yorker, they ran a
profile of a Brisith author of detective fiction. I've managed to toss
out the magazine and now I can't remember the author's name or the
name of his detective. The detective is a character like Raffles--very
stylish, always talking about food, clothes, etc., very witty,
debonair, enormously egotistical. Apparently the author was the same
way; people used to think the books were authobiographical. The author
was married three times, died in poverty, has a long name that sounds
sort of Anglo-Indian. Anybody happen to remember this profile and can
clue this clueless guy in? Thanks!

Can't help I'm afraid but you could try your question in rec.arts.mystery.
There's some very knowledgeable people there in the mystery field.

Could be Charteris I guess and his character "The Saint". Charteris was
Eurasian and had a very active varied life. A very handsome man I imagine
he had a lot of romantic affairs but according to imdb he was only married
once - go to :- <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0153546/bio" target="_blank">http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0153546/bio</a> for details - and I
believe he was quiet well off financially when he died.

And here it says he was married four times. Who can we trust?

No-one it seems. Let's hope some Charteris expert will drop by and clear it
up.

Doubt it. I've not seen the article in question; Leslie was indeed
married four times (the last one for just over 40 years) but certainly
didn't die in poverty and I wouldn't have thought anyone would
consider his name, or his original name of Leslie Charles Bowyer-Yin
as "sort of Anglo-Indian".

No, it's not Charteris. I already knew the Saint series, and this was
something new to me. So far I've visited two different libraries
without being able to come up with the right copy of The New Yorker.
Ah, well....
