Recently saw Cronenberg's adaption of Burrough's "Naked Lunch".

Naturally assumed the "getting high on bug powder" theme was fictional
.... until I bought some cockroach spray and saw this message on the
can:

"INTENTIONAL MISUSE BY DELIBERATELY CONCENTRATING AND INHALING
CONTENTS CAN BE HARMFUL OR FATAL".

The ingredients are listed as 0.7g/kg imiprothrin and 2.0g/kg
cypermethrin.

So what's the deal here ? Do people actually get high on bug spray ?

I'm sure it's a metaphor for addictive substances in general, and AFAIK it's
Cronenberg's idea - not Burroughs'.

Of course it's harmful; it kills roaches doesn't it?

Hell, go ahead and try it.
Make sure to report your findings here. If you're still capable, that is.

You're right - Burroughs never wrote about bug powder as far as I
know.

Obviously - but my guess is it wouldn't take much heroin to kill a
roach either :)But the message on the can seems to imply that there IS
"intentional misuse" - the idea seems ludicrous to me so I was looking
for an explanation ..

Well, you see, there is a basic flaw in your thinking. The idea of getting
high by committing slow suicide is only ludicrous if you assume that humans
are rational. If you can just get that silly little fairy tale out of your
head <g> then it becomes so much easier to accept the fact that some people
are physically incapable of thinking past "sniff poison, feels good, keep
doing it".
