Raimondo accuses Bush of, inter alia, "duckspeak".

I didn't catch the program myself.

Any thoughts?

Raimondo isn't a liberal, you know: he's a "paleoconservative" -- a
throwback to the "America First" strain of the American right. See e.g.
<http://cscs.umich.edu/~crshalizi/weblog/archives/000061.html> and
<http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A16764-2003Mar23?language=printer>.
He seems to have some weird friends and fans, beginning with Pat
Buchanan.

For critical analysis of today's "Meet the Press" appearance from
cleaner sources I'd sooner look at Josh Marshall
<http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/> or David Corn
<http://www.thenation.com/capitalgames/index.mhtml?pid=1245>.

I watched. I listened.

Bush reiterated in his usual barely articulate way all the "reasons" why
people should believe he has done wonderful things for Iraq, the US, and the
world. It was embarassing to experience this duplicity and maddening to have
one's intelligence insulted so frequently.

Russert: You told the people that we had to invade Iraq because there was no
doubt that he had WMD as was going to use them against the US. That was
false.

Bush: Well, yeah, but you don't understand. See, we knew he had those
weapons.

Russert: But they didn't have those weapons.

Bush: Right, but see, then we knew that he had them. There was no doubt.

It seemed to me that Bush's underlying intent was to continually pound away
at the idea that the US is at war and will continue to be at war and
therefore, he and his minions and their exercise of power is not only the
only solution, but the right way.

I see them as a major problem for the vast majority of the people of the
world.

No, he's a paleo-libertarian. See

if you want to learn more about the breed.

Why do you make a point of saying he's not a liberal? Haven't we had
enough fights for you to know that *I* am no liberal? Smile

As am I. I differ with Raimondo on immigration, but that issue divided
the Old Right as well.

After the first Gulf War, I voted for Buchanan in the Republican
primary. (Tennessee has open primaries).

Raimondo supported Buchanan for a time, but eventually broke with him
over libertarian/conservative differences.

I could never respect Buchanan as a person because of his gay-bashing.
Raimondo, who is gay himself, gets past that somehow. That's a
curiosity that doesn't affect how I feel on the subject.

Which I'm doubtless unworthy to approach. Smile
