Some of McHugh's Annotations are all in capital letters. Some of
there are clearly acronyms formed from the first letters of sequential
words in the text, but others are not so easily deciphered. Is there
rhyme, reason, or a rule that describes his use of all caps?

We've broken pg. 200! We really enjoyed Ch. 7 and Ch 8 is excellent.
"Tell me every tiny teign!"

Thanks

Jason

One "all caps" category seems to be pointing out items in a set:

NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST

CLUB DIAMOND HEART SPADE

Exactly. I couldn't find anything in the introduction that specifically
addressed the question, but after perusing the first hundred pages or so, it
became clear (actually, I think I figured this out when I first read the
Wake some years ago using the Annotations) that ALL CAPS is a device to call
attention to things that are in proximity and belong together in some way,
as, for example, Art's examples. Also, I found DOVE and RAVEN, a pair of
opposites. And MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN, with a couple of the words on other
lines.

Also, if you find a capped word by itself, that's a clue to look for others.
I found SILENCE a good page and a half before CUNNING. Couldn't find EXILE,
but I only spent a few seconds looking, having figured out what I wanted to
know.

I would really love to read Finnegan's Wake - I've read and gone over Ulysses non stop for half a year in college now, and it's honestly been the best reading and even at times the best life experience I've had.
