One of the cable channels (TNT, I believe) is showing /LOTR:FOTR/ this
weekend.
The announced time is 3:45, which makes sense: a 3 hour theatrical
version with 15 minutes of commercial per hour. Since 3:45 is a rather
odd running time for TV, it is possible that it is (except, no doubt,
the end-titles) uncut if it is the theatrical version.
But the local paper's TV listing claims it is the "extended edition".
This same claim was made for the two-part (network TV?) broadcast a
while back.
I watched the first few minutes, but it started the same way as the
theatrical version always has. I have never seen the EE, but I am told
the introduction on that version goes all the way back to Cuivienen.
It is, of course, possible that the writers of these TV listing notes
simply do not know how long the theatrical version is and so are
assuming that an movie this long must be "extended".
Then again, this /is/ TV: they could, I suppose, be broadcasting the
EE but modifying (cutting) it to fit into their timeslot. It could, in
other words, be a TV-butchered version of the EE rather than the
director-constructed theatrical version.
Although their commercials for this claimed "the adventure continues"
for Saturday, the start of what they showed was, in fact, the start of
the movie; what "continues" appears to be showing it three times on
one weekend; it is not that they showing it in three parts.
Does anyone know what was actually being shown?

The TNT broadcast included material not in the EE. The exchange
between the Fellowship and Haldir's company when they first enter
Lorien is longer (this is while they still have the Fellowship at
arrow-point, before they climb to the flet).
I checked the EE DVD and could not find the part where Gimli says
something about turning back, and Haldir says something like "She is
waiting for you."
Is this included in the theatrical release? I don't have a DVD copy,
so I can't check. >> Stay informed about: Cable TV LOTR:FOTR Version |

The EE starts VERY differently from the ThV. You would have
known if you were watching the EE because it would have been
totally unfamiliar. I think that it must have been the ThV.
The other post about arriving at Lórien reinforces this
hypothesis.

One change I noticed is that Bilbo's back was to the camera
when he made the "Gollum-face" in Rivendell, so you never
actually saw the face. Bleh-at least I have the EE, so who
needs TNT...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Cable TV LOTR:FOTR Version |

I haven't seen the ThV since it came out - could you please refresh my
memory? What were the differences in the opening? I didn't remember the
opening sequence being that different.

The whole thing with Bilbo in the study writing 'Concerning Hobbits' is not
in the theatrical version.
I didn't see the whole thing on TNT, but it definitely was not the EE that
we got on DVD. They may have added a few scenes to the theatrical version,
however.

I saw Bilbo's "Gollum face" in at least one of the airings. Did they
go so far as to edit a less scary version for prime time?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Cable TV LOTR:FOTR Version |

Why does anyone who owns the DVD watch it broadcast?

Since I own both versions and I saw the Friday
primetime broadcast, I'll relate what I saw. The
version on Friday was definitely the theatrical
cut of the film. I watched it from the Council of
Elrond (I caught it while channel surfing at a
relative's house) and it was missing all of the
extended edition scenes. Interestingly enough, I
definitely saw Bilbo make the "Gollum-face". My
son always leaves the room for this scene so I am
particularly aware of it and tell him when it is
over and he can come back. I wonder if they
removed the scene before the encore cablecast on
Saturday.

No, that it does not. Cuivienen is not depicted or mentioned in any way
in any of these films, whether in the ThVs or the EEs.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Cable TV LOTR:FOTR Version |

I'm guessing that you mean *after* the prologue it "starts" very
differently. The prologue itself is virtually identical in the ThV & EE
as I recall; it is only when the film then gets to the Shire that the
versions become significantly different.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Cable TV LOTR:FOTR Version |
