I have a friend who will be starting a post-doc at MIT and is currently
looking for a bachelor/1-bedroom apartment near the MIT campus. Ideally, it
will also be within walking distance of a gym and a grocery store.

Can anybody help with suggestions on neighbourhoods/places to avoid??

Keeping in mind that what I know about Boston, MIT, and Cambridge is what I
have seen on Dawson's Creek, would you care to rephrase your answer. <g><!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You probably know more than me, then. I know a bit told me by my
friend who graduated from Harvard's Astrophysics department...but
that's about it. She and I didn't talk much about the
neighborhoods around Cambridge/Boston/Harvard...we mostly
discussed astronomical events, Dr. Who, and other similar
things... Smile

I've never visited MIT myself, but I've got acquaintances who
suffer^Wattended MIT as undergrads. I could pass the request
along. Contact via email. (Would help to know any gender
restrictions, perhaps research area, since your friend may want
to focus particularly on areas close to the buildings s/he
may be working in.

Havahd is *in* Cambridge. A bit on the left side, but still within
the boundaries. And to make things a bit stranger, the bridge over
the Charles River at MIT is the Harvard Bridge, as opposed to the
bridges somewhat closer to Harvard.

You probably already know the name of the closest subway station to
MIT: it's Kendall Square. That's where Charlie started his famous
ride in the song "MTA".

And Harvard isn't that far from MIT. Recall the (Kingston Trio?)
song "Big Ball in Boston" in which one can find the lines:

And just a mile from Harvard's
A place that you should see....
