Ah. I don't think I visited Target, or Walmart, or Costco near Xmas in the
last few years (all those nasty, long lines!); perhaps that's why I didn't
spot them.

This year, I found my LED Xmas lights at OSH. Can't avoid stopping there
regularly -- I always seem to be in need of household thingies.

I believe I specifically purchased non-blinking lights. :>

Live Xmas trees are too ambitious for me. They always seem to be some tree
that, full size, will be a very, very, very FULL tree size. I do know
someone who has kept their Xmas tree alive, in a container, for years at a
time... but she's a skilled gardener. And it is a hard-to-find tree, one
that does not want to grow to monster size.

> I did have a tiny rosemary tree one year. It died by February.

The last couple years, I've managed to get the rosemary in the ground by
mid January. :> It worked, last year, and the bush -- while no longer
resembling an Xmas tree in the least -- is thriving. But those rosemary
Xmas 'trees' are horribly, horribly root-bound. Rosemary needs ample room
for roots, much more than they get in those (pretty and decorative) red
plastic containers.

What is OSH?

We have a couple sets, last year we put the color changers in a window.
We put little globe style on the (artificial) tree this year. I was
looking for some plain white, or whitish blue, non-blinkers to be used
year-round as low level 'night lights' in and around the house, but they
sold quickly.

If you are looking for LED light bulb (120 Volts) I got a catalog from
cyberguys.com that had some. Their website has a handful, but I had to
do a search for "LED Bulbs" to find them.

On the upside, flourescent lightbulbs are very long lasting. And low
energy. I haven't had any of the flourescent bulbs I've purchased poop out
on me, yet, and I think I ought to let them keep going until pooping out
occurs. I've plugged some of those flourescent bulbs in and out of several
apartment light fixtures, as I moved around -- still going.

So I may be waiting awhile before I get to play with LED lightbulbs in my
lamps and fixtures.

(Duuuuuuuude! The Roomba really does find the home station and plug itself
in, even after wandering all over my house for an hour! That's so cool!
It just plugged in and sang a tiny, triumphant song at me.)

We had ONE die on us this year. And it wasn't even one of the older ones.

We had to replace a couple flourescent bulbs the first year we lived
in the new house but who knows how long they'd been in there.

Ooooo, you've got a Roomba! I keep looking at those but I figured it
would terrorize the fur children too much. Particularly since my 3
feline overmasters are such fraidy-cats. <g>

The jury is out. They've looked at it, looked at me, looked at it, looked
at me. I'm not attacking it, so they figure it can't be a threat, and it
may fall into the category of things (like shoes) that the human protects.
There have been some feints at it -- if it reacted like a rabbit and ran,
or flinched, I think there would have been chasing.

But, being a robot, it just kept on vacuuming. Not acting like prey.

Funny to watch them trying to figure out what to make of it.

It has picked up quite a lot of 'stuff' from my floors that I didn't know
was there. (Might have preferred not to know.) And it vacuums spots I
just never get around to, which is cool. Under my bed. Under the
armchair. Even fits under the couch (barely). Startled me, when I'd taken
my eyes off it the first night and it popped out from under the couch and
bumped into the backs of my heels.

If you have three overmasters, that means you have three times the fur...

I just like robots.

I have a REAL fraidy baby cat. He used to run from it, but less so than
the vacuum cleaner. They are really quiet, in comparison. Now, he barely
moves out of its way when it's coming right at him. *roll eyes*

Has he actually let it bump into him?

The Roomba would bounce off. But is the cat willing to let it get that far?

Our dog was mystified by it for a while, but now she doesn't pay it too
much attention. Of course, I don't run it while she's in the same room

Haven't seen them in OZ. Do they climb stairs? If not, I'd need 2 and
would hope the upper level one doesn't fall down the stairs!

No, they don't climb stairs. But they do have a sensor that prevents if
from falling down the stairs. However, I have an older model, and it
sometimes got stuck (no more stairs to worry about now) on the top step.

We had our first one go a couple weeks ago. It was one of the first ones
I got, was a 100 or 150 watt equivalent, and in the living room and
therefore used many hours per day; it was easily over a year old.

It died by flickering a few times, like a temporary loss of power from
lightning or a car hitting a pole, then it went *POP* and quit sucking
up darkons. Kind of cool! BTW, it just made a *pop* sound, not *pop*
like a glass balloon all over the room.

The only 'big' incandescent bulbs we have left are in dimmer controlled
fixtures (with one 'experiment' with a dimmable CF), and the porch light
for which I can't find a bright, weather-safe CF that fits in the jelly
jar cover. I even have some LED night light bulbs slowly replacing those
incandescents.

Here is one page that has LED replacements for standard incandescent bulbs:
http://www.besthomeledlighting.com/home?gclid=CJr6n7S89I8CFQg1WAodREgpMg

And if the "Holiday Spirit" is still around: http://www.holidayleds.com/

They are NOT cheap however, at least short term. They may pay for
themselves long-term with reduced electric charges and less frequent
replacement.

A warnimg however on ALL fluorescent lamps. In MANY areas it's illegal to
simply throw them in the trash when they finally die. Unlike incandescents,
they contain Mercury, so they are classed as "Hazardous Materials" in many
locations!
