I just picked up this collection of Vonnegut's stories. Not just to read Hal
Irwin's Magic Lamp, but because I'm wondering if my copy has any collector's
value. I have the 1961 first printing by Gold Medal Books (paperback). Can
someone point me in the right direction?
Many thanks.

It certainly sounds legit, and if so, does indeed have collector's value,
though I don't know offhand what it's been going for recently. Does your
copy give a more specific printing date (including the month)? According to
the 1987 Vonnegut bibliography by Pieratt, Klinkowitz and
Huffman-klinkowitz, it should.

It says September 1961, nothing more specific.

I believe it has one story that has not been collected in either Monkey House
or Snuff Box. At least that has been its main reason of collectibility in the
past.

And that's the correct answer! It sounds like you've got the real thing. Get
a good deal on it?

"Hal Irwin's Magic Lamp" was included in _Canary in a Cat House_, omitted
from _Welcome to the Monkey House_, and then included in _Bagombo Snuff
Box_. It is the only story that was included in _Canary_ but omitted from
_Monkey House_. There are two quasi-fictional works by Vonnegut that remain
uncollected or unpublished in book form, to my knowledge, but neither one is
really a short story:

1. "The Very First Christmas Morning", _Better Homes and Gardens_, December
1962. A short children's play that seems rather out of character for
Vonnegut.

2. "Hole Beautiful: Prospectus for a Magazine of Shelterdness", _Monocle_,
5, No. 1, 1962. A facetious proposal for a magazine for bomb shelter owners.

There is also _Sun Moon Star_, with story by Vonnegut and illustrations by
Ivan Chermayeff (Harper & Row, 1980). Out of print and not widely available.

Around $30 after shipping . . . not bad I though.
